Spell & The Gypsy blog created by local Byron Bay jewellery designers Isabella (Spelly) & Lizzy has been a favourite of mine for so long! I've spent endless hours emersed in the pages of their whimsical, free-spirited world, always leaving creatively inspired & filled with wanderlust. So when Spelly emailed me her wedding pics by Beck Rocchi recently I was beside my self with anticipation to see this beautiful couple's day brought to life. Enjoy these gorgeous pics and make sure you click on 'video' in the gallery below to see their sweet wedding film by Johnny Abegg who also shot our L'Amant & Bohemian Love Story films. Karissa x

HOW WE MET: I left Melbourne and moved to Byron Bay in 2004 and met Dougall in 2005 when I was working at a video shop.  He had two broken legs after a surfing accident and during his recovery kept coming into the video shop hiring the same DVD’s over and over just to see me!  I then started working for him at his Backpackers Hostel, and a week after that we were together. Two years later we got engaged.

OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY: We went on a big holiday to Margaret River in Perth for a friends wedding, then to Bali for another friends wedding, and doogs was all loved up! And proposed to me on the cliffs at Tanalot Temple. It was a grey eerie cloudy day and the waves were crashing up against us on the cliffs, we were so close to the edge that I felt the drops of water landing on my face and the seaweed was swimming around our feet. I will never forget  the magic in the air that day. It was very special.

MARRIAGE TO US MEANS: We can stand together as a family and look out to the world and live our dreams.

WEDDING LOCATION & WHY  WE CHOSE THIS VENUE: Well that’s a funny story. Our first location for the ceremony was at a house on Belongil Beach in Byron Bay and the reception was to be held at the Treehouse Restaurant in Belongil.  But 8 weeks before the wedding, the treehouse burnt down. It was such a shock! We had no idea what to do! Fortunately a friend of mine showed me this gorgeous country house in Ewingsdale and we jumped at the opportunity to rent it out for the weekend as every possible location was totally booked out! It was really a blessing in disguise, as the house was perfect! We had the ceremony and the reception there. The weather was absolouty glorious and as the sun set the light shone through the tall gum tree’s. It was truly the most perfect day to be out in the hills.

OVERALL THEME/STYLE/MOOD: The mood was very natural and relaxed … and the theme was gypsy/bohemian with some Native American influences. The estate was adorned with oversized white feather dreamcatchers, trails of hanging feathers, large shell hangings, handmade embroidered buntings, vintage wooden chairs, fur rugs, and a large white Tee-Pee filled with carpets, soft pillows, fur blankets and candles …that was the ultimate cosy gypsy getaway from the crisp still night air outside.

BUDGET: We organised our wedding with only the bare mininum in mind, we didn’t go overboard with anything, which meant we could stay within our budget!! A lot of money was saved on doing the decorations myself and picking our own flowers xx

PHOTOGRAPHY: I chose to use Beck Rocchi Photography as she’s a dear friend and has shot quite a few of our Spell Shoots and we love her enthusiastic, casual ‘off the cuff’ style of shooting. She also took a series of pregnancy photos for us when I was 8 months pregnant with our boy Texas, so I felt it only natural to ask Beck to shoot our wedding day! I think she captured the essence of the day beautifully!

(interview continued under gallery...)

BRIDE’S DRESS: Designed by Spell. Nostalgic. Vintage beaded Lace and silk satin, long slendour with low back.

BRIDE’S SHOES: Ceremony: barefoot with woven floral anklets. Reception: tan suede ankle boots.

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES: All designed by Spell. Loose fitted flowing bohemien silk satin dresses with embroidered lace trimmings.

BRIDESMAID’S SHOES: During ceremony: Barefoot. Reception: Bridesmaid’s own heels.

FLOWERGIRLS/PAGEBOY OUTFITS: Our flowergirl wore a dress she chose out for herself by “Origami”. It was a cute A-line knee length satin dress with polkadot mesh over the top. She also wore an oversized Spell crystal suede cuff and white bone bull ring! Texas wore a mini Dougall floral shirt designed by Spell. But he was a bit nervous and a bit too confused to walk down the aisle, so he just stood a few rows back and watched Mama and Dadda get married.

JEWELLERY/ACCESSORIES: All jewellery by Spell. Turquoise rings, brass crystal eagle cuff, turquoise leather necklaces, crystal necklaces, eagle bone ring, bone bull ring. All feather hair pieces by Spell.

WEDDING RING STYLES: I am of Latvian heritage so I had traditional Latvian Nameja rings handcrafted in full sterling silver by our Spell silversmith.

GROOM/GROOMSMEN ATTIRE: Groom wore - Joe Browns Vintage Apparels Floral shirt. Groomsmen wore - Various coloured Floral Shirts designed by Spell

HAIRSTYLE: Softly curled free flowing. With feather and plaited leather head crown and embroidered mesh Viel by Spell.

MAKEUP STYLE: Natural earthy. All the hair and make up was done by my twin sister/maid of honour – Luciana Rose Briedis.

BOUQUET TYPES: All handpicked Lavender and white roses from a local farm, wrapped in satin ribbon.

VIDEOGRAPHER: Johnny Abegg. He is my sister Lizzy’s fiance. He has worked on all of our latest Spell shoots and has a very intimate style of filming. He captures the atmosphere and emotion and beauty of the day so well. He is truly one of the most talented and real film makers out there. Filming our wedding was his wedding gift to me and Dougall. Looking back I think the video is priceless and an amazing way to relive the day - it completely takes me back to the day which was of course quite a blur!

CEREMONY DÉCOR: Rose petals adorned the walkway alongside pale pink rose bushes and a White Tee-Pee stood high and proud with its white ribbons on top blowing in the breeze. On top of a large aztec rug stood a bamboo tee-pee wrapped in cotton sheet and bunches of lavender and off to each side ran a string of black and white eagle feathers.

RECEPTION DÉCOR: The backdrop for the reception was country house with white picket balcony all around.  On the balcony were old white vintage chairs and tables adorned with white doylies, bunches of white roses and scented candels sat on the tables, White  embroidered handmade buntings hung all around, large white feathered dreamcatchers hung from the rafters,  along with more strings of black and white feathers.  A little vintage, boho, gypsy, Native American Indian theme.

WEDDING PLANNER: A dear friend and wedding planner, Jodie Anderson, helped in an unofficial capacity. So while we did a lot of the planning ourselves, I couldn’t have brought all the logistics together without her help. She even helped pick flowers  on the morning of the wedding!

WEDDING STYLIST: I did all of the styling for the wedding - decorations, bride and bridesmaids, groom and groomsmen attire and ceremony and reception décor.

CAKE TYPE: Chocolate Mud Cake, three layers of cakes and cupcakes with a Spell, Dougall and Texas figurine on the top layer! Cute!

WEDDING SONGS: Walking down the aisle - Bob Dylan: To Make You Feel My Love. First dance song was Otis Readings version of “That’s How Strong Our Love Is” Our first dance was incredible to this song, all the couples came up on the dance floor and just hugged eachother swaying. That song just makes you feel pain, love and happiness all at once.

ENTERTAINMENT: We had a band “Passion Flamenca” (Sergio and Paul) a beautiful Byron Bay duo, beautiful voice, amazing guitar and a lot of passion! Followed by DJ Beaver.  He absolutely rocked!  Everyone was dancing and having the most amazing time. Full of fun. And great sing along classic hits!!

FOOD & BEVERAGES: Alcohol supplied by The Cellars Byron Bay and local caterers. Beer, red wine, white wine, champagne, pina colada machine mix (that was a real hit!!) and finished up with hot tea’s, coffee, chai, honey and hot chocolate to sip while your chilling in the tee pee!

TRANSPORT TYPE: We stayed on-site so there were no cars to or from the venue – but our guests were shuttled by Mick Gamble Coaches

HONEYMOON: High Tide Beach House, Childe St, Belongil, Byron Bay and then Bali.

CELEBRANT: Zenith Virago

READINGS USED: We wrote our own vows and had no readings.

SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: When arranging the wedding I tapped into the imagery I source all the time for Spell – blogs, mags, books, my imagination, this paradise I live in in Byron Bay – but mainly I just channelled my own aesthetic which is beachy bohemian gypsy.
