Married in a quaint 100-year-old church nestled in the foothills of the Byron Bay Hinterland, Neil and Krystal's wedding was a blend of chic sophistication and vintage country charm.

The intimate setting of the Fig Tree Restuarant was the perfect reception space, styled with a vintage aesthetic and incorporated burnished silver candelabras, mismatched antique chairs and an array of cut crystal vases filled with bold wildflowers and draping ferns in deep green hues. 

Capturing Neil and Krystal's special day was talented husband and wife team Rachel Kara & Tim Ashton.

HOW WE MET: At Centrepoint Tower in Sydney through mutual friends

OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY: We went to Queenstown for the first time for a snow boarding trip and to also celebrate our 1 year annivarsary. We stayed at this beautiful lodge called Blanket Bay and Neil proposed on a little jetty at the bottom of the snow covered mountains. It was such a beautiful moment!

MARRIAGE TO US MEANS: Binding ourselves together with love.

WEDDING LOCATION: We always wanted to do a destination wedding and being huge fans of Byron Bay and it’s laid back culture it suited our approach to our wedding perfectly! The ceremony was supposed to be an outdoor garden/picnic feel but with that one element of the day that you can’t rely on being the weather we had to change that plan the day before. We ended up at a cute little church in Federal, which is up in the Byron Hinterland and it was even more perfect that we could have imagined. It was around 100 years old and had beautiful mis-matched antique pews and stained glass windows.

The reception was held at Fig Tree Restaurant in Ewingsdale and it was such a lovely cosy venue to spend the evening celebrating with all our  friends and family, it was so comfy it was like being in a big old family home!

THEME/STYLE: Vintage, Country, Traditional

BUDGET: Both of us wanted quite a humble wedding so we certainly didn’t spend beyond what we thought was necessary, we werent out to impress anyone, that’s certainly not what the day is about so we kept our wedding budget well under control and splurged when it came to our honeymoon.

BRIDE’S DRESS: My ceremony dress was designed by Leah Da Gloria and it was my dream dress. She was amazing at working with me and turning my dream into a reality! I basically knew what I wanted so I didn’t have to do all those tiring dress hunting missions which was great. It  was a long sleeved ivory italian lace dress with a lowish back and a button detail on the sleeve and the back, I fell in love with the lace the moment I saw it. The style i was going for was I guess 1920’s mixed with snow white 

For the reception I changed into a vinatge 1960’s dress that I purchased online from Etsy for $180, it was my “Party dress” and it was the best $180 spent because I was able to have a great time and dance the night away without ruining my beautiful lace dress. 

BRIDE’S SHOES: Just a pair of beige kitten heels that I picked up from a shoe store in Double Bay, they were super plain but most importantly easy to walk in

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES: Finding the bridesmaids dresses was harder than I thought, I ended up with deep navy silk Zimmermann dresses and a crystal and beaded embelishment was hand sewn on just to tie it in and dress it up a little, it was such a versatile dress and suited all the girls perfectly!

FLOWERGIRLS/PAGEBOY OUTFITS: We had one of my best friend’s daughters as our flower girl- Isla, she was adorable! She wore a lace shift dress and a flower headband. She was so cute , she stole the show and my mum jokingly said she was too busy watching Isla coming down the aisle to notice me 

JEWELLERY/ACCESSORIES: I kept the accessories very minimal as I was more interested in the dress being a feauture so the only accessory was my orange blossom flower crown. I picked it up from the Surry Hills Antique centre, it was from the 1930’s and was literally made from wax and apparently was a very popular wedding headpiece in the art deco era and being obsessed with antiques I had to have it!

WEDDING RINGS: My wedding band is just a very fine , antique , engraved white gold art deco style. I didn’t want something that would steal away from the unique beauty of my engegement ring and I also wanted something that I could bang around, do boxing with and help Neil on the job site with. Neil’s band is an original Burmingham antique from the1890’s with a traditional floral “Forget Me Not” design. 

GROOMSMEN ATTIRE: Neil wore an old-school looking black Tuxedo and the groomsmen wore dark navy suits, all from Calibre .They all wore matching black bow-ties.

HAIR: Leah from ‘Wedding Hair By Leah’, she was fantastic! I was really happy with both mine and the bridesmaids hair, we all had very different looks that we wanted and she achieved them all! My hair was just a very soft wave, I didn’t want it to look too “done” that was my main concern.

MAKEUP: Stephanie from “Rococo Makeup Artistry” did such an amazing job, I am so particular when it comes to makeup so I probably drove her nuts but she was so lovely and patient! The look was a bolder eye but still quite earthy and natural overall

STATIONERY/INVITATIONS: Most of the wedding stationery I actually made and designed myself, which was pretty time consuming but loads of fun! 

FAVORS/BONBONNIERE: We had a pot of local Byron Bay Honey for each guest as our wedding favor, it was the yummiest honey I have ever tasted!

FLOWERS & BOUQUETS: Jess from Poppy and Fern did our beautiful flowers and the bouquets. We used an array of different colours and flowers like peonies, poppies, daisies and draping ferns in the bouquets and feautured on the table settings. 

PREPARATION: Myself and the bridesmaids all had a sleepover at Byron View Farm, there is a cute little cottage house there and it was nice to just spend the night up in the hills of Byron with them and a glass of wine to ease the nerves. We all got ready together the next day!

CEREMONY DÉCOR: Apart from the flower arch we really didn’t have much in the way of the ceremony décor, the church was beautiful enough as it was and I think keeping it rather minimal made it look a little more traditional.

RECEPTION DÉCOR: We had quite a vintage look for our reception. I had collected numerous crystal vases and silver candelabras for the tables throughout the months leading up to the wedding from op-shops and markets. We also had fern draped across the centre of the tables and bunches of coloured flowers in the vases. There were vintage table cloths and mismatched antique wooden chairs.

CAKE: The cake was a 2 tiered Chocolate Hazelnut mudcake from Rebellyous Cake Co and it was so rich and delicious. My mother in law hand made the cake decorations/icing flowers to match the peonies in my bouquet and she even made a replica of my orange blossum wax crown to wrap around the base of the cake, it was nice to have that added little touch from her.

ENTERTAINMENT: Kyle Lionhart who is a local Byron Bay artist who sang throughout and after our ceremony and his voice was just phenommenal! We then had a DJ with a quite a heavily R'n'B and hip hop influenced playlist for the reception 

FOOD & BEVERAGES: After the ceremony we had a picnic with Mezze plates and my grandma’s famous scones with jam and cream. Later at the reception there were canapes and a cocktail bar followed by a sit down feasting dinner, we all shared plates of some of the yummiest local produce, adding to that homely feel that we were after. 

HONEYMOON: As I mentioned,  we really left it to the honeymoon when it came to going a little bit more extravagant budget wise and not having really travelled much together we used this as the perfect opportunity to visit all the places we had on our hit list.

First stop was Hawaii , we then went to Mexico visiting Mexico City, Puerto Escondidio, Tulum, Playa del Carmen. From there, we went to Miami and then did a 7 day cruise around the Carribean. Next stop was New York and then our final destination was Canada where we went to Vancouver and then spent Christmas and New years day snowboarding in Whistler.In total we were gone for 2 months, it was the trip of a life time and we honestly have no regrets skimping out in a few areas of the wedding day so that we could have our dream Honeymoon!

CELEBRANT: Our celebrant was one of Neil’s closest friends and having him be apart of our day in such an important way was so special to us. He made everyone in the room smile and laugh and made the whole ceremony really relevant to us and our beliefs.

READINGS: One of the bible readings we chose was 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. This verse just sums up what love is so perfectly.

ONE THING I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED MY WEDDING PLANS…The planning part isnt really as fun as it looks, try not to let it become a chore and take away from what the day is really about!

IF I COULD GIVE OTHER BRIDES TO BE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE… Don’t stress if things don’t go to plan, at the end of the day all the little details aren’t important. Whatever happens your wedding day will be perfect because it is a day just for you and the one you love and is all about dedicating your life to one another. In other words - don’t sweat the small stuff!
