Places to Lose Yourself... Secluded Campsites Around the World

Monday, April 3rd 2017

"I longed for real silence
the kind you can’t find
but stumble upon
in some cabin
on a lake without a moon,
where you hear the cigarette burn
and the candles flicker
and your mind dances alive
to the symphonies in the black"
- Atticus

Searching for space for conscious introspection, we’re dreaming of time spent in nature to find hidden inner truths and forgotten musings. Find a simple and complete escape - an isolated patch of paradise and a temporary home to connect with the natural world and find your balance. Disengage from technological distractions and go off the grid, embracing the allure of seclusion and secret wanderings.

Perfect for pre-wedding reflections or spiritually inspired bachelorette parties, we’ve put together a list of dream campsites designed for pure seclusion. Be romanced by awe-inspiring mountains, desert landscapes and star-filled skies, by deep silences punctuated only by shifting sand and restless seas...

Erg Chigaga Luxury Desert Camp

Situated in the centre of the Erg Chigaga Desert, Erg Chigaga Desert Camp offers complete seclusion and serenity. A luxury campsite of nomad tents and sumptuous suites, we love Erg Chigaga for sweeping views of Moroccan plains, a horizon dotted with rolling sand-dunes in shades of burnt sienna. Think candlelit nights and Berber furnishings, time spent immersed in untouched landscapes...

Black Rock Campsite

An expansive landscape of golden, sunbaked plains surrounded by twisted rock and exposed granite; Joshua Tree is strewn with cacti and holds five fan palm oases. A fragile ecosystem of delicate lifeforms, we love Joshua Tree for slow mornings and quiet afternoons, the perfect place for self discovery and reflection.

Longitude 131

A luxury wilderness retreat overlooking the sunburnt terrain of the Australian Outback, Longitude 131 epitomises opulent seclusion. A compound of only 15 tents, experience complete seclusion in one of Australia’s most sacred sites. Utterly serene and inherently peaceful, with uninterrupted views of Uluru…

Camping Valle del Cocora Salento

With palm trees stretching infinitely into the heavens, Valle del Cocora is a forest of clouds flanked by rolling mountain foothills. A sea of wild grass and protected palms, we love Valle del Cocora for tropical camping in the heart of Colombia. Think canvas tents and woven hammocks, nights spent amongst native flora in one of the world's most beautiful landscapes.

Discovery Parks – Cradle Mountain

Set in the Lake St Claire National Park, Cradle Mountain is surrounded by ancient rainforests and alpine heaths. Home to some of the most magnificent views Tasmania has to offer, we love Cradle Mountain for wintery travels in breathtaking scenery. Think icy streams cascading from rugged mountains and local wildlife drinking from glacial lakes…

Treen Farm Campsite

Tents speckle the Cornwall coastline, pitched in fields spilling with lush wildflowers. Overlooking inky seas and golden sands, slow down and watch waves crashing over moss covered rocks next to boats moored on the shore. A fully equipped site with picnic benches and a fire pit, we love Treen Farm for quintessential English tranquility.

Paperbark Camp

A tented bush camp just two and a half hours from Sydney, Paperbark camp is a secluded escape perched in the treetops of the Shoalhaven. Our pick for city escapes and weekend staycations, for sumptuous forest treehouses surrounded by turquoise waters and deserted beaches…

Laugavegur Treck

Pitch a tent along one of the most incredible treks in the world. A breathtaking landscape spanning a spectrum of colors, where orange-capped hills and slopes stained brown meet mossy veneers and ebony sand. Soak in geothermal pools by day, and sleep amongst fields of white blossoms by night.

Bahia Concha

Tracing the coast of the Caribbean, Tayrona lies at the foot of Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. With smooth shores in palettes of azure and turquoise, we love Tayrona for daytime slumbers on hammocks strung between palms, balmy sunsets and midnight swims...

Húsavík Campsite

An archipelago of 18 tiny remote islands, we love the Faroes for wild landscapes and uncharted terrain. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean between Norway and Iceland, expect dramatic fjords and cliff faces, abandoned villages and total isolation amongst panoramic views.

Totaranui Campground

Camp next to crystalline waters and sleep under a sky filled with stars. Soft tides are juxtaposed with dramatic cliffs, a coastline carved from granite and marble that juts from the sea to the skies. The waters surrounding the park are also a known nesting spot for fur seals and a playground for blue penguins.

Parque Nacional Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi National Park's centerpiece and namesake is one of the world's tallest active volcanos, considered sacred by local Andean people. Surrounded by landscapes in mossy greens and earthy greys, natural springs filter off glacial peaks into scrubby bushland and grassy fields.

Whitehaven Beach

One of the world’s most beautiful beaches, we’re forever drawn to Whitehaven’s white sands and pristine shores. Known for its shifting tides that create a swirling constellation of colours, we love Whitehaven for beachside camping and tropical escapes.

Poolside, Sydney.

When it comes to planning events, sometimes you can tick all of the logistical boxes, you can style a space to perfection, guests filter into your meticulously planned occasion… but the vibe isn’t quite there. As event stylists, the goal isn’t ever to impress guests with elaborate decor, it’s always about creating atmosphere. And it starts with the venue.

High on our list of waterfront spaces that lend to effortless cocktail celebrations is Sydney’s Poolside at Andrew (Boy) Charlton. Events aside, it’s a destination you’ll find us frequenting on any sun drenched Sunday morning, or for afternoon cocktails on their stunning outdoor terrace. Poolside is the kind of transportive space that completely shifts your mood, the moment you step through the entrance.

Enveloped by water, perched on the edge of Sydney Harbour and overlooking the iconic Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool, Poolside is our dream space for languid dining and cocktail events. Beautifully infused with modern decor, Poolside evokes a mood of effortless Summer elegance, so effortlessly chic it barely requires styling.  An open aired terrace is scattered informally with cocktail furniture, black and white striped umbrellas shadow contemporary wireframe chairs (finally a venue that provides decor you would actually choose to hire!), and tables are accented with organically shaped, hand painted ceramics. Inside, floor-to-ceiling glass windows provide unobstructed views over Sydney Harbour and Woolloomooloo Bay, perfect for wet weather, or as a winter venue for those wanting oceanic inspired celebrations without being exposed to the elements.

Inspired by the venue's relaxed summer mood, Poolside has us dreaming up chic cocktail celebrations accented with luxe tropical decor achieved with foliage. Think simple, structural arrangements like singular bismarckia fronds angularly placed in vases. Combine layers of greenery (we love muted or deep green tones) in contrasting textures and shapes. Keep your focus on exquisite canapés, beautifully presented and suffused with flavours evocative of exotic travels. Think fresh seafood, oyster and sashimi bars, artfully arranged salads styled with edible blooms, entrees perfumed with flavours of citrus, mango and coconut, all paired with signature summer cocktails. For cocktail events, Poolside also offers chef stations where they can cook and serve a signature menu on the outdoor terrace, adding beautifully to a mood of relaxed summer elegance.

The Avalon on the Beach, Sydney

Friday, November 25th 2016

Of all of the curated luxuries we can attach to the wedding day, the true jewels of the occasion are the things that transcend it. They’re the things that last well after a carefully planned day, becoming the building blocks of a lifetime. They’re the sub-modalities at play, that elevate an occasion from a gathering that takes its place in your memory, to an experience that makes its home in your heart.

More than ever the greatest luxury of all, is the symphonic beauty of the uncluttered. It’s having the base to create, the space to breathe, to dream, to believe, to contemplate, to start every moment anew. The space for sensory silence instead of the inspiration-muting effects of the deafening sensory overload the world hits us with every day. It’s this highly elusive space that we scour the planet for, because we know that these are the pockets where the magic happens. The spaces that allow us to step in and bring to fruition the dreams of the soul that are welcomed by the quiet mind. It is this definition of metaphysical luxury, The Avalon On The Beach offers, and completely excels at.

Situated on Sydney’s far northern beaches, it is a crystal in the crown of this iconic stretch of coastline. Offering an uninterrupted connection with the sea owing to it's sweeping 180 degree aspect on the sands of Avalon Beach, and flooded with natural light, it’s easy to forget that you’re indoors. Overlooking palomino sands of reincarnated shells, giving way to a sea of aqua so distinct, the hue itself could be more accurately named 'avalon blue', it is a wedding and reception venue of arresting natural beauty.

Driving north from the city, the moment you begin the coastal meander around the well known Bilgola Bends, the weight of the world falls to the sea below and you immediately feel like you’re on holidays. Avalon awaits on the other side, and is a vibrant village of food, fashion, and curiosities, with a distinctly French flavour that your visiting guests will love to explore. The windows of The Avalon On The Beach are the eyes to the soul of the locale. Perched directly on the sand, with a summer-all-year-round vibe, and an ocean breeze that becomes you, it is the perfect blank space to style your dreams.

We recently road-tested the space ourselves, creating our own mood-board and bringing it to life within this idyllic seaside venue. We were struck by it’s shape-shifting ability to follow any brief, allowing a styling paint-by-numbers, cushioning any décor decision with the finest canvas and palette to work with (and that view!).

The Avalon On The Beach, embodies the kind of completely unbridled limitlessness, that steps far beyond the wedding day. It is a physical space of stunning beauty, but more importantly, it inspires that metaphysical space, the one that carries forward love, depth and freedom into a marriage, creating indelible memories that aren’t just remembered, but felt.

MOOD: Inspired by the mesmerising fluidity of the ocean and the glimmering dappled light on the surface of the water, a balance of delicate lightness and effortlessly chic elegance.

DECOR: The tablescape is a serene palette of layered whites and iridescent textures evocative of the luminescent ocean in the glistening sunlight. Movement is created with dramatic drapes of billowy table linen. The glassware is handshaped and the organically shaped tableware contrasts with structural black elements in the way of matte black flatware and wire seating to add a sense of grounding to the organic feel of the tablescape. An overflowing eruption of andromeda and white phalaenopsis orchids spills over the tablescape reminiscent of intriguingly complex ecosystems.

STATIONARY: Handpenned calligraphy place cards on raw edged textural handmade card.

DRESS: For bridal parties, chic slender slip dresses paired with imperfectly undone knotted hair and a statement drop earring.

MOOD: Natural, effortless, raw simplicity…

DECOR: Long exposed whitewashed timber tables are sparsely styled with weathered driftwood, bleached of all its colour intertwined amongst long tapered flickering candles. Laid with mother of pearl handled flatware alongside hand thrown plates of pale in dusty, muted neutrals and irregular shaped glass tumblers, sitting quietly on muslin linen placemats, the tables finished with sun, exposed white wooden chairs.

STATIONARY: Menu design inspired by the movement of the ocean, faint gradient water-washed brush work adds to the relaxed, calm feel of the tablescape.

DRESS: Ethereal floaty, silhouettes in a palette of muted neutrals.. Tousled hair, styled half up lends itself to the overall romantic effortlessness..
