About Damien Milan

I see myself as a dreamer and nomad at heart. I love that weddings allow me to have a peek into people’s life for one day. If you let me be part of your journey, I would love to immortalise your memories in a way that is real, raw and timeless.

Although I grew up in Belgium, I moved to Australia in 2007 and today I feel very lucky to call the Blue Mountains home with my wife Nastia, our gorgeous daughter Mia and our cat Frida. As my relatives all live in Belgium, we take this opportunity to regularly travel to Europe in summer to gather inspiration and photograph a limited number of destination weddings.

Behind The Brand

What draws you to wedding photography?

My interest for photography grew from a love for travel while exploring new places and cultures. The beautiful complexity of people, feelings and places always fascinated me. I find it extremely rewarding to be given a chance to create a connection with like minded people on their wedding day and to tell their story in a way that feels honest, intimate and emotive.

How would you describe your photography style?

My work can be described as real, raw, timeless and cinematic. When documenting people’s stories, I like to take the back seat and play the role of a quiet observer. Trust is a key aspect of my work and I like to use an instinctive approach to capture fleeting moments and sincere emotions.

What inspires you creatively?

Light is at the core of my work and I am always up for experimenting with it in an intentional and artful way. All my photography packages include 35 mm film coverage. I love how film helps to capture images in a more intentional way and I find the analog process very meditative. It pushes my creative boundaries and the beautiful imperfections of film suit the timeless nature of my work.

What is it that makes an image magical?

When time, light and emotions all align in one single frame.

What advice would you give couples when selecting their wedding photographer?

Follow your instinct when looking at different portfolios and pick someone that you trust to be a part of your day like a friend with a camera.

Your dream location to shoot a wedding?

A rugged volcanic landscape would tick all the boxes for me.

Editor’s Notes

Why we love Damien…

There’s a wildly romantic energy to Damien’s work – a moody, poetic ambience that melds beautifully with emotion and location. His frames manifest a unique magnetism and are creatively composed.

For the couple…

Looking to be enchanted by images that make you feel, where each moment is told cinematically.

Our advice…

Consider a venue steeped in moodiness or surrounded by sprawling landscapes. Trust his innate sense for extracting magic, whether that’s heading outdoors into stormy weather or shooting in dark corner illuminated by candlelight.
