Collette Dinnigan's 2010 "Snow White" range is a whimsical collection that has us smitten! Evoking imaginative childhood dreams and fairytale romance, the couture gowns feature elegant silhouettes, softly-sculpted silks, delicate tulle, french lace and intricately beaded bodices. LANE chats to Collette about the inspiration behind her designs and advice on finding the dress of your dreams....
What is your earliest fashion memory? Making clothes from old Butterick patterns
What is something that people do not know about you? I love science fiction!
Do you have a certain woman in mind when you design your collections? No, more a moment in time and making the women wearing the gown feel part of that moment. I always have a journey in mind; an exotic destination perhaps, I design for the character and events. In essence, each collection is about capturing a mood that makes a bride feel beautiful and special.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Creative, passionate and adventurous.
Tell us about the inspiration behind your “Snow White” collection... It was taken from a beautiful land of fairytale and romance. The collection is inspired by feminine elegance with styles that are unaffected by the passage of time and take design inspiration from stories within the range. Fabrics range from delicate silks and multi-layered silk tulles to the organic textures of crisp linens and embroidered cotton laces. Hand-beaded bodices and intricate jeweled details marry in with French laces for gowns that are distinctive and unique not only due to their embellishments but also as we create a limited amount of garments in certain styles.
How has your work evolved through your different collections? There is a natural evolution across each collection but the essence has remained the same, timeless and whimsical but with a modern, feminine edge. My designs embrace a women’s figure, from the cut and tailoring of a dress to its fabrics. It is important to me to create pieces that make you feel special when you wear them rather than looks that are dictated by trends. My customer is a bride that is comfortable with her own sense of style and my designs complement this.
What advice can you give brides when searching for the perfect dress? Always choose a dress that fits you when you try it on rather than what you hope will fit for the day. Choose styles that accentuate your best features and consider the shade of dress that best suits you rather then naturally opting for white. Choose a dress that as well as making you feel special makes you feel comfortable not clumsy.
Fashion is….. Having fun.
