In three words… Romantic. Unexpected. Eclectic.
Mood & Muse… Inspired by fabric and silhouette rather than a muse, silk plisse and romantic ruffles dominated this dreamily feminine collection.
Highlights…An otherworldly, sheer long sleeved sequinned bodysuit with fluted cuffs, styled with shimmering pale silver palazzo pants (pictured first). Daring yet classic. Completely unexpected elegance.
An off the shoulder ensemble falling in delicate layers of sheer and opaque white tiers, fluted and gently floating around ankles (image 28 in gallery). Ethereal, yet thoroughly modern.
A romantic, gently ruffled gown blending lace with silk in daring sheer sections, sleeves pushed from the shoulder framing collarbones and cinched at the waist for feminine sensuality (image 9 in gallery).
The collection…Consistently offering an unexpected take on 'bridal', once again Houghton beautifully blurred the lines between what is bridal or ready to wear for the modern woman. One of those brands best defined as how you 'feel' wearing their pieces, more than anything, Houghton is a mood, and it’s a cohesive one that underpins every collection, irrespective of the direction that season. The second you step into their space you're transported into the Houghton world…and this season proved no exception.
For Spring 2017 designer Katharine Polk made the decision to exhibit the collection, salon style, rather than a traditional runway approach, a decision that served both the brand and the collection stunningly. In a cool townhouse, complete with a DJ, a champagne bar (& cute bar tenders!) the very first pieces to greet you stepping inside are all unexpected shades of blue, ivory, pants & body suits…quintessentially Houghton, quintessentially unexpected.
Creating a series of live vignettes, models were scattered across several floors of the transportive space, guests moving room by room through light flooded installations where you were able to interact and experience the garments (and their texture) up close. Like a cool house party in mood, once reaching the top of the building, ‘real brides’ (who had unprecedented access to this collection), were able to shop the pieces, straight from the show.
The collection itself, although tight by usual Houghton standards, was precise and stunning. Looking beyond the signature, super edgy styling (fish net stockings, platform heels etc) these were luxurious pieces that open themselves to being reimagined in countless aesthetics for your own unique wedding and personal style. Romantic, sensual, delicate and (surprisingly) classic, silhouettes and fabrics focussed on a lightness of touch, with texture built through superfine layers. Cascades of fabric were brought to life in silks and lace, delicate layered ruffles lending a softness to the gently sculpted silhouettes.
Having unearthed silk plisse in Paris, and building a collection around that, Katharine described her process this season as beginning first with fabric and silhouette (versus a muse or thematic inspiration), a process of mixing fabrics and bringing pieces to life informed by a delicate and romantic layering of textures.
Just like the Houghton girl (who forever reminds us of the words ‘every woman is a thousand women’) brides will find unique pieces within the Spring 2017 collection, reflective of both their unique personality and a myriad of celebratory settings. Perfect for choosing your own romantic adventure.
