Details of wild florals, morning surfs and preparatory stills all documented with a lightness of touch…the eclectic bridal party, the rustic styling, a floral infused menu and a magical sparkling send off, captured candidly and beautifully in a series of moments highlighting the euphoric, intimate energy of the day.
HOW WE MET: We grew up in the same suburb and have always known each other. First year out of school we started to hang out through mutual friends. It didn’t take long for us to start dating and the rest is history.
OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY: Jonny proposed on an early morning walk on the cliff top in Sorrento. It was a cold miserable morning and I wasn’t sure why he insisted we do this walk. I didn’t think after 10 years he would be able to surprise me, but he succeeded. I had no idea! He also managed to pull some dolphins in for the event! Haha.
MARRIAGE TO US MEANS: Family, teamwork, laughter & lots of love!
WEDDING LOCATION: Our ceremony and reception was held in the Byron Bay hinterland at a residential property called the Byron View Farm. We have always loved Byron and spent a lot of time there both with our families growing up and as a couple. We think it is the best holiday destination with beautiful beaches, surf and great food, so we thought it would be a perfect wedding location. From the moment we visited Byron View Farm we knew it was the perfect venue. The property and views were absolutely amazing. There is a gorgeous one bedroom Queenslander cottage located on the property, this was our accommodation both the night before (girls only) and night of the wedding. The cottage had been beautifully designed and topped off the whole experience of the venue. After our first visit we couldn’t wait to share it with all of our family & friends.
THEME/STYLE: Our approach was to put all of our favourite things into one place. I think our style was a little glamorous a little rustic and a little bohemian. I remember being in awe of everything on the day, I was so happy with the way it came together. It really was all of our favourite things in the one place and we just wanted to package it all up and take it home with us.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Shane Shepherd and his wife Dee. We both loved his natural approach. Shane had already shot a wedding at Byron View Farm that we both loved. After an hour long Skype chat with Shane with booked him in and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
BRIDE’S DRESS: My dress was a custom gown from One Day Bridal. I went there knowing that I wanted a seperate top and skirt. Kyha and Steph brought it all together for me and it is the best dress I have ever seen! I wore a lace halter-top and a full raw silk skirt. It was the perfect balance of fun and formal.
WEDDING RINGS: Jonny chose my engagement ring from Krista McCrae. It was such a lovely experience with Krista that we had our wedding bands made by her too. They are both yellow gold in her unique faceted design.
STATIONERY/INVITATIONS: A friend Lauren Foy designed the save the dates and invites for us. I had the wedding invites printed on timber by The Print Fairy. All other stationary such as place cards, seating chart and entrance sign where designed and made by me. A company called Design Awards helped put together the entry plywood sign.
FAVORS/BONBONNIERE: I chose to make candles for guest gifts. I wanted something that I could make and that would be low in cost. It was a long but fun process.
FLOWERS & BOUQUETS: I wanted the flowers to be rustic, colourful and fun. I didn’t want anything rigid or formal. We both loved the flower arrangements. The arbour was so beautiful and the rustic greenery suspended from the tipi looked amazing over the bridal table. Ros from Flowers on the Run could not have done a better job. I was able view my bouquet a couple of days before the wedding and I had the opportunity to tweak and change things, I really enjoyed being involved in this process.
VIDEOGRAPHY: We decided only 3 weeks before the wedding to use a videographer. Shane Shepherd, our photographer put us onto Gold Bear. We wanted something that was not a typical wedding video and Rich did a great job.
PREPARATION: I spent the night before at the farm with my bridesmaids, it was amazing waking up to the sound of the cows and that view! Mum came up in the morning with breakfast for us all and we spent the morning and early afternoon slowly getting ready.
CEREMONY DÉCOR/ RECEPTION DÉCOR: The view and setting of the Byron View Farm, is so amazing that not a lot was needed. We wanted everything to feel quite natural and had timber bench seats and timber tables. We introduced lots of rustic greenery mixed with colourful flowers. The tipi was definitely the star of the day. It set a great tone for the wedding and was so much better than a standard marquee.
WEDDING PLANNER/ WEDDING STYLIST: The wedding was styled by my own interior design business We Are Huntly, as an interior designer I happily took on this role with my business partner Kylie. Byron Bay Weddings who manage the Byron View Farm were the source of the furniture and some of the props on the day. I was able to select from their options of chairs, tables, linen, arbours, marquees etc. This was very helpful and made it easy not having to run around sourcing from multiple suppliers. They also set everything up for us and did a great job of managing the events of the day.
CAKE: We knew we didn’t want a traditional tiered wedding cake. I chose a large heart shaped cake, which I knew was bordering on daggy but I loved it and it looked gorgeous on the day. It was gluten free hazelnut chocolate covered in coconut flakes…it was delicious and every piece was eaten! From Let Them Eat Cake
WEDDING SONGS:Ceremony songs: With A Girl Like You by The Troggs and Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield. We wanted to have fun with these songs and they really set the tone of the day.
First dance song: Lovely Day by Bill Withers
ENTERTAINMENT: DJ, Trina Massey. She was the best. People are still talking about how good the music was. She had everyone swaying, clapping and singing along during the seated dinner. After dinner the dance floor was full all night.
FOOD & BEVERAGES: We wanted to have a sit down dinner, it is a long day for the guests and we wanted to make sure everyone was properly fed. Canapés were served after the ceremony up until dinner. The Fig Tree did our catering, and everything was so fresh and yum. We had a mixture of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes with fresh salads boasting ingredients from The Fig Tree’s local garden in Byron Bay.
TRANSPORT: I stayed the night at the farm with my bridesmaids, it was so nice waking up there and watching the wedding set-up come to life. Jonny and the groomsmen came from town in vintage Kombi’s.
HONEYMOON: We were already in the Byron Bay! So we stayed for another 12 nights. It was the perfect relaxing holiday after a very fun filled, but exhausting, wedding prep lead up.
GIFT REGISTRY: We had a contribution registry on Not Another Toaster . We liked the flexibility of being able to add any style of gift or experience we wanted. We chose some key furniture pieces for our home and had a contribution towards our home renovations we have planned.
CELEBRANT: Karlye Williamson, she was recommended to us. We liked her casual and friendly approach.
READINGS: We both wrote our own vows, which we found was really special on the day. We had my sister Georgie’s boyfriend Isaac do a reading, he chose to write something of his own, which was fun and relevant to Jonny and I.
A MEMORABLE MOMENT: Walking down the aisle. And the MC revealing to me during his speech that Jonny had been injured whilst surfing and spent the morning of the wedding being stitched up. Everyone who new managed to keep it a secret, I couldn’t believe it. We were very lucky he wasn’t more hurt!
IF I COULD GIVE OTHER BRIDES TO BE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE: Enjoy the planning and try to keep both of you involved in making decisions for the day. Have fun through the process, it is such an exciting time in your life and every moment should be enjoyed!
