A wedding drawing inspiration from Morocco's luminous palette In the most unexpected of venues, The Orara Valley Estate in the Coffs Harbour hinterland. The bride in an Emilio Pucci gown, Channeling Anita Pallenberg on the effervescent rooftops of seventies Marrakesh in an ecru Lack Of Color wide brim, illuminated by a sensory blend of kilim textiles and & muted pastels of a bouquet spilling with succulent's.
Captured by Myles Pritchard the outdoor ceremony effortlessly flowed into the garden reception along with the coastal sea breeze. Where guests were transported to Spain with an indulgence of Sangria, Paella & Salsa while the sun set over the Valley.
NAMES: Rachel Joy Kean & Nicholas Glendower Evans
WEDDING DATE: 3rd of May 2014
HOW WE MET: Through friends.
OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY: Nic repeated our very first date 5 years earlier – Breakfast, putt putt golf and proposed on ‘our spot’ on a headland.
MARRIAGE TO US MEANS: Life long commitment, love, support and unity forever.
WEDDING LOCATION: The amazing Orara Valley Estate. I grew up in Coffs Harbour and would never have imagined the ultimate wedding venue would be right back at home. We wanted to have the weekend spent with family and friends. Orara turned our dream into a 4-night fiesta, which was perfect for the vision and theme of the wedding. Felt like we were in another country.
THEME/STYLE: A mixture of Moroccan and Mexican influences throughout. Succulents and cacti balanced with autumn greenery and a colourful bridal party, to fit in with the location. We wanted to create a happy, fun environment from the colourful invites, to the first dance- the salsa!
PHOTOGRAPHY: Incredible fashion photographer and friend Myles Pritchard shot our wedding. We were so lucky to have his amazing talents, and a true creative genius. We really love how Myles captured the joy and fun of the wedding, revealing the amazing time we all had.

BRIDE’S DRESS: Emilio Pucci Dress.First layer was incredibly detailed with 70’s dragon artwork that was hand beaded, falling straight to the floor and cutting in at the shoulders. The second layer was a sheer silk slip that had two thigh high splits revealing the detail underneath.
BRIDE’S SHOES: Aperlai– 70’s wedge- I have a love of the 70’s but also the highest I could find for the dress!
BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES: Missoni. One of my favourite brands. I wanted the girls to look unique and to love what they were in. They all wore something different but complemented each other and the general theme of the wedding, which was colourful and fun.
WEDDING RINGS: Custom made Natalie Marie rings, including my engagement ring designed with 16 diamonds from a family heirloom broche.
JEWELLERY/ACCESSORIES: My great grandmothers charm bracelet, Venice earrings, Lack of Color Hat and a mix of rings.
MAKEUP: Editorial makeup artist Lie Tai worked her magic! She is known for her natural style and dewy sheen! I had a sixties influence on the eye. Lei is represented by The Future Mrs.
STATIONERY/INVITATIONS: Everything was colourful! We wanted a fun wedding and the invites, nametags and menu's all carried a colourful geometric block theme with Mexican tones. Graphic designer Paije-Tarne Sheed worked on these for us.
FAVORS/BONBONNIERE: We gave succulents wrapped in leather pot plants with leather string.
FLOWERS & BOUQUETS: Flowers made our vision and dream come alive! Florist Kate Moylan director of Ffolium, blew us away with her talents! We had a lot of succulents and cacti as the main base. The bouquets were all completely succulents. Mine had autumn tones while the bridesmaids were all green. We also had four arbor installations that looked incredible. Foliage and amazing autumn tones hanging in the reception. Inspiration came from the love for greenery, flower installations and our Moroccan theme. As we had so much colour the greenery of the flowers worked beautifully!
PREPARATION: The master bedroom of the estate, a fun morning dancing and singing with my beautiful bridesmaids, mum, my sister and the amazing team making us look our best ;-)
CEREMONY DÉCOR/ RECEPTION DÉCOR: Our décor was very us. Our love for Moroccan and exotic interiors, succulents and cacti. We didn’t have any flowers on the table just cacti and succulents. Working in fashion, the art behind Missoni has always inspired me. The prints and colour’s of the girl’s looks influenced how I styled the rest of the décor. We had colourful Turkish table runners down each table. Wooden candles, baskets candle holders, colourful vases. Big beautiful wooden tables from Rosie Posy events as well as wooden chairs, crystal lanterns and foontoon lighting.
WEDDING PLANNER/ WEDDING STYLIST: I did all the styling for the wedding. We hadNorth Coast Luxury weddings as our wedding planner and Amanda was incredible due to the flooding weather she planned a wedding in a day!
CAKE: The colour’s of our cakes were similar to those of the guest wedding invites. Four separated tiers with the following flavours: sour cream coconut buttercream, caramel and honey mud with salted caramel fudge, red velvet with cream cheese frosting and black choclate mud with dark chocolate ganache, from Sugar Plum cakes
WEDDING SONGS:Embrace by Oliver Tank was the song the bridesmaids and myself walked down the isle to. James Vincent McMorrow’s Higher Love was sung by Amy rose and Julian Mcgruther during the signing. The first dance was to Justin Timberlake’s Let The Groove Get In.
ENTERTAINMENT: Luna Grand played for us. Incredible band doing cover songs. They played three sets. One while we were getting photos and the others for the dance floor.
FOOD & BEVERAGES: Sit down Mexican Fiesta with share plates of Paella, Guacamole, Tacos, etc. Beautiful Henschke red and white wines and bar including Margaritas and Sangria.
TRANSPORT: 28 guests were on the property with us for 4 nights the remaining guests were picked up and dropped off by a bus.
HONEYMOON: Santorini, Greece and Italy. A Must do is is Lake Como in Italy, Incredibly stunning!
GIFT REGISTRY: We had a gift registry. My uncle was incredibly generous and pretty much surprised us with funding our honeymoon.
CELEBRANT: Justin Pearson
READINGS: My sister Hannah did a reading.
ANY OTHER SPECIAL DETAILS:
SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: Interiors and fashion played an influence. I had mood boards including images of label Camilla’s runway show a couple years ago filled with cactus and succulents. Greenery and flower installations, editorial shoots and interior styling was great sources of inspiration.
A MEMORABLE MOMENT: Our wedding actually got flooded out. We had to postpone the whole occasion a day. I wouldn’t change it for the world! We were blown away by everyone pulling everything together and making it happen the day after (Sunday 3rd). It felt like it was always meant to be and we had the best day/weekend of our lives!
ONE THING I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED MY WEDDING PLANS…The weather! Ha!
IF I COULD GIVE OTHER BRIDES TO BE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE…Go with the flow. Enjoy the lead up into it, put everything aside of what might be the fairytale and remember the whole reason you are there, its about you and your groom, the love you have for each other, and sharing that with those closest to you both.
