Behind The Brand
Your best pieces of planning advice?
Making images with soul is a collaborative effort between the photographer, and the bride and groom. An experienced photographer will have spent hundreds of hours at weddings, watching people in changing light and adjusting to suit the situation. Work with someone who can give suggestions about how to use light and time to your advantage. This is important for creating the most flattering images, which will pay off for years!
As an example, I always sunset portraits to the couples I collaborate with. Luminous portraits that glow, have the sunset to thank. Take time to step away from the formalities to enjoy each other and have some private moments. This is the time when we achieve these iconic, soft sunset shots. It’s a time to take in the feeling of your beautiful festivities. By this stage of the day it is an amazing opportunity to capture those fun and romantic moments when it is just the two of you.
What was the spark for Bear Deer Fox? Where did the story begin?
It started because I can’t live without creating. Wedding photography allows me to spend my time with couples making the ultimate gesture of commitment and love.
So I am able to create beautiful images with people who are having the happiest day of their lives.
What inspires you creatively?
Music: I always have songs playing in my head while I shoot. It helps give movement and energy to my images.
Paintings: My style of wedding photography is documentary for most of the day. So I like to fit things in to the frame that tell a story, so that you can look at each photograph like it is a painting.
Most memorable place you’ve travelled?
I always enjoy NYC but the beach near my house has my heart just as much as the Big Apple.
On a typical weekend we’ll find you?
Shooting weddings. But in the off season I will be in New Zealand or perhaps California road tripping. If I get a weekend at home I am up early with a cup of tea flicking through my vinyl collection choosing the music to start my day to.
