Combining their passion for imagery and their professional background in the fashion world and photography within the surfing industry, Juan and Carmen established JFK, a photography and film boutique, over 10 years ago. As a couple, they understood the importance of preserving those unforgettable moments shared with loved ones in a unique way. Together with their team, they create photographs and videos that aim to provide an elegant and sophisticated approach to the visual narrative of weddings, crafting images that not only document but also inspire.

What draws you to wedding photography & videography?

We are fascinated by capturing the emotions of the happiest day in people’s lives. We aim to rescue all those moments and make them eternal in an elegant and natural way.

How would you describe your photography & videography style?

We believe that what you are passionate about defines who you are, and undoubtedly, our passion for light and all its nuances has led us to pursue it with our cameras around the world. We strive to give our images a poetic and documentary style, seeking beauty in details and simplicity. We are inspired by the perspective and temporality of Annie Leibovitz’s portraits; the way Sebastian Salgado captures beauty, and the documentary eye of Eugene Smith, Cartier-Bresson, or James Nachtwey. Our style is a blend of all those photographers who inspire us and make us see the world in a beautiful, poetic, romantic way, while also being contemporary and trend-aware. This same approach informs our video work, where we seek the real and enhance its beauty.

What inspires you creatively?

We are inspired by the sea; it is our element, and we always feel at home when we are near it. Surfing its waves and enjoying the myriad shades of sunset colors. Traveling… few things inspire us like discovering new lights, scents, flavors, and of course, meeting wonderful and new people. Often, inspiration comes from the simplest things, like the smell of good coffee, walking barefoot, the feel of the paper of a good photography book, and of course, great cuisine.

What is it that makes an image magical?

When you manage to capture the strength of a true emotion in an instant, combined with the subtlety of a good composition and the right light. That’s when a photograph suddenly elevates to another level. Other times, simply a texture, a contrast, or a moving image can transport you to a specific place and moment just by observing it; that kind of magic keeps us hooked.

What advice would you give couples when selecting their wedding photographer?

Seeing a complete body of work in photography and video is essential. It’s not the same to take a handful of beautiful images as it is to maintain a high level of quality throughout the entire photo report. And of course, getting to know and having a good connection with the people who will accompany you on such a special day is important. For us, those two points are essential, and it’s the advice we give to all our friends.

Your dream location to shoot a wedding?

That’s a really tough question. As lovers of light, it would be impossible to choose just one. We adore the Mediterranean light of the Balearic Islands, the Greek islands, or Tuscany, as well as the vibrant greens of Europe’s native forests; and of course, sunset weddings on the beaches of our beloved Costa Rica. But weddings are shaped by the people who celebrate them, and our dream wedding will always be filled with genuine love and people eager to celebrate life to the fullest.
