About Joanna Brown

With a postgraduate degree specialising in photography, Joanna began to master her art over the last 21 years working first as a photography lecturer and exhibiting artist.  She has developed a distinct style combining fine art portraiture with photojournalism and editorial photography. She draws inspiration from her love of fashion photography as well as artists.  Whilst the camera is not central to her art, she shoots on a variety of both digital and film formats to enhance the feeling of her work.

“I am terribly romantic and live by the sea.”

Behind The Brand

How would you describe your photography style?

I’m interested in creating art for you that just happens to be on your wedding day. I strive to create playful, sensitive, strong, timeless images. Combining photojournalism with a hint of an editorial style to create the narrative. Then more of a fine art style to capture beautiful portraiture on the day.

What is it that makes an image magical?

I would say it is a combination of elements. It is the connection between the couple (or subjects), a mood that is created through lighting, framing to anchor a viewpoint and illustrate a narrative, and finally, the enigma of an image can be something that is totally organic to that moment—which can come out of any number of things. Sometimes I feel like an alchemist. Many people can pick up a camera and take a photograph, but I think only an artist can be an open conduit for the magic that takes place.

What advice would you give to the camera-shy couple?

Firstly, it is totally normal to feel like this. Most of my couples feel this way and I find it helps if we openly talk about it as part of the process of working with me.  The emphasis of my photography is about the connection between the couple first and foremost. All I really require is for my couples to be present with each other. It’s my role to create and hold this space and then capture what unfolds in my own style.

Do you travel interstate or internationally?

I am based in the UK and travel all of the UK, Europe and worldwide.

As an estimate, how long does your editing process take?

My delivery time is 8 weeks, this allows for film to be processed and scanned, and the images to be carefully edited by hand.

Describe a magical moment from a wedding you’ve photographed…

Gosh, this is a hard one to answer as I have shot well over 250 weddings and now in my 10th year of weddings. There are so many magical moments that happen throughout the day. However, what really stands out to me is when the wedding, in some way, is really personalised. I have witnessed a brother write and read out a beautiful poem, I have seen the band Bombay Bicycle Club sing Leonard Cohen in the ceremony, as they were friends of the couple. I have seen a groom’s young son stand up and read a story he had created for his Dad. I have seen a Grandfather give a sermon, passing on his wisdom through tears in his eyes. When real honest moments of vulnerability are spoken and shown in a wedding, these are the magical moments. Seldom do we have this chance to come together and connect and celebrate. To do so with such openness is really life-affirming and beautiful. And it’s own magic.

Editor’s Notes

Why we love it…

Balancing the line between fine art portraiture and reportage style photography, Joanna’s frames are undoubtedly some of the industry’s best. Each capture is creatively composed, spilling with authentic emotion, style and human connection.

For the couple…

For creative couples drawn to art and design who think outside the box. Joanna’s frames are candid, charismatic and far from traditional (in the very best way possible).

Styling tips…

Joanna’s work suits a variety of themes, from modern to feminine to classic. That said, her eye for colour and contrast is incredible, so play with decor and floral design to create something entirely unique.
