Behind The Brand

Your best pieces of advice for event planning?

I have been in the bridal industry for over 20 years now and I have found that planning a wedding has changed a great deal since I started. Brides are now often opting for weekends away or even “festivals” for their wedding, often at a destination that requires travel for themselves and their guests. This involves a great deal of planning and organisation.

However when shopping for their gown I think the process has become much more accessible since ready-to-wear bridal gowns were introduced by top bridal designers several years ago. This means that a bride can now plan a wedding in only 3-6 months and purchase a gown straight off the track for their special day.

We sell ready-to-wear bridal gowns priced from $2000 and made-to-order from $3000 and we have brides visiting the Design Studio when their wedding is anywhere from 2 months to 18 months away.

What was the spark for your brand? Where did the story begin?

I had trained in fashion design and costume and textile design and wanted to work in high end fashion design in an area where I could use all the skills I had accumulated. Bridal seemed to be the best option for creating one off masterpieces using the best silks, European laces and beadwork available. It was 1997 when I started my own brand LISA GOWING and there was a very limited supply of modern designer wedding gowns in Sydney at that time. I had worked for another high end bridal studio and had a clear idea of what I wanted to offer. At that time a beautiful bridal studio with custom made gowns seemed like the perfect way to encapsulate my brand.

What inspires you creatively?

I am inspired daily by anything and everything. By what I see in nature, on the streets, in the movies and life in general. A piece of wallpaper, a flower, a book, I can see beauty everywhere and create from what I see. When I travel I find I do my best design work as new places and people always gets my creativity flowing. I carry my sketchbook with me when visiting any new place and have bought both of my sons their own sketch books to capture their thoughts, drawings and dreams.

Most memorable place you’ve travelled?

Capri in Italy or St Tropez in the South of France. Both of these places hold a special place in my heart. I first travelled there with my husband before our children were born and love the beauty of these places, the ease of the lifestyle, the wonderful people and of course the fabulous local produce and the incredible market and boutique shopping these places offer. New York is where I first showed my collection internationally and remains special to me for this reason and the memory of growing my brand in such a dynamic arena.

On a typical weekend we’ll find you?

On a Saturday I am usually in my Design Studio meeting with brides! I the afternoon I sometimes catch up with friends on my way home but usually head straight home for a glass of wine with my family.

On Sunday mornings both of my boys now play junior afl and my husband is their coach so we travel to the game and then have a BBQ at home afterwards. Sometimes it’s just us and other times our friends or family join us. We live in a lovely leafy part of Sydney and enjoy our home as our sanctuary, swimming in Summer and enjoying some sun on the terraces in Winter. We love to entertain and often invite guest for a drink, lunch or dinner.

Editor’s Notes

Why we love it…

Lisa has mastered the art of designing flattering womanly cuts that hug the body in all the right places elegantly and refined.

For the woman…

For the bride with an affinity for the classic; French lace, cathedral trains and crystal beaded belts.

Styling tips…

Balance the classic with a bit of modern. Pin fresh white sculptural blooms such as orchids or magnolias into a soft bun atop a haircomb veil  or opt for Baroque pearl drop earrings as an updated vintage style.
