About Mary Dougherty
Mary Dougherty, a New York wedding photographer who documents refined celebrations throughout the United States and destinations worldwide. Evoking the energy of your love through artfully candid photographs, she shoots with a number of different film (and digital) cameras to add to the stored quality of your celebration. The result is photographs that feel distinct, time-honored, and impossible to replicate.
A career design spanning more than two decades, Mary’s classical training, innate creativity, and love for connecting with others, has formulated her signature style—rich with emotion, movement, and refinement. Most importantly, her images are a reflection of your profound love.
Behind The Brand
What draws you to wedding photography?
As an artist creating custom work I am always inspired by my couples, their story and the vision they have for their celebration. I consider not just aesthetics, but relationships. The moments between couples, their family and close friends will be shared in stories for decades.
How would you describe your photography style?
I bring a refined perspective that allows for both documentary moments and editorial direction when needed.
What inspires you creatively?
I love to soak up art in all its forms and get inspired by black and white movies, abstract paintings, interiors, fashion and so much more. Alongside that I love to be in nature. A day in the mountains or on the lake is refreshing and that’s why our home is in a stunning mountain town.
What is it that makes an image magical?
My favorite images are full of emotion, but I think our relationship with images changes over time. Some images are magical right away because they are inspiring, sharing something you haven’t seen. Others take you somewhere, transporting you to a time and place that makes you feel the wind, hear the sound of laughter or know the feeling of an embrace. Finally, as time goes on images that we overlooked at first sometimes stand out, you notice something new or see the people photographed in a new light.
What advice would you give couples when selecting their wedding photographer?
Trust your instinct when it comes to picking someone who understands and listens you. If possible, be involved as a couple in the process and talk about if this photographers approach works for you. Does the experience you want for yourself and your guests match what you see reflected in the galleries? Have you had a real conversation with them? Choose someone you look forward to having by your side.
Your dream location to shoot a wedding?
I’ve been thinking about Majorca, but I love returning to Eleuthera.
