About Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen
Founded in 1963, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen is one of Scandinavia’s most prestigious fine jewellery brands. The family-run Danish brand is still to this very day, designed by founder Ole Lynggaard, along with his daughter Charlotte, in their Copenhagen workshop. Ever inspired by nature and natural forms, the designs reflect an elegant, sophisticated, yet modern edge.
Behind The Brand
Your best pieces of advice for couples when choosing an engagement piece or wedding band
I would always advise a bride and groom to-be to pick out wedding bands that they feel truly express who they are. Don’t follow short-lived trends, but really make an effort to identify what appeals to you on a deeper level. People are normally advised to choose timeless styles that are impossible to grow tired of – but I find it is even more important to choose jewellery that you feel drawn to. Our engagement rings and wedding band are designed with somewhat classical expressions, but still they differ quite a bit from more traditional styles. For instance, our Nature rings are satinised to add texture to the surface – which gives this wedding band a little more edge. Our Winter Frost solitaire is romantic and modern, and yet it almost looks like a family heirloom.
What was the spark for your brand? Where did the story begin?
You can almost say that our brand story began as a story of love. My father graduated as a trained goldsmith in 1957. He left Denmark to travel the world and to find inspiration for the fine jewellery brand he dreamt of creating. During these formative travels, he met my mother in Paris. When my father returned to Denmark after five years, my mother was there to greet him at the airport, and they have been together ever since. My father established his eponymous brand in 1963, he and my mother married in 1965, and my brother and I were born not long after. A family company was born – even before any of us knew it!
What inspires you creatively?
Nature has always been my biggest source of inspiration. I was raised to thrive outdoors, and I feel at home and safe in nature. I can spend hours in the forest and on the beach outside my home, and I love observing swaying branches and exploring textures and colours of forest flora. Women (in general) are also a major source of inspiration. It makes me very happy when I see my jewellery designs on numerous types of women of all ages, representing a vast array of cultural traditions.
Most memorable place you’ve travelled?
I must admit that Australia holds a very special place in my heart. I have been to Australia many times, and last year I spent a month there with my husband and our three children. We had gone to Australia to visit my eldest daughter who lived in Sydney for almost a year. It was a magical trip, and I was completely mesmerised by the ocean and the bounties of nature. The way of life in Australia is also quite unique and captivating. I cannot wait to go back.
On a typical weekend we’ll find you?
Working in my garden, walking in the forest, cooking, and sketching. I love having time to myself to recharge my batteries and immerse myself in creative thinking – but I also spend as much time as possible with our almost grown-up children and our close friends.
A favourite quote?
I have always liked Søren Kirkegaard’s quote ‘To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.’ It is important to explore life. You could argue that daring to venture into marriage in this day and age is a little like losing your footing – but with the right person you have actually found footing and will never lose yourself!
