About Vagabond Bridal

The Vagabond Bridal brand was founded in 2017, and the debut collection launched in 2018 with great success around the globe. Vagabond’s designer, Valery Zelenyuk, who lives in Cape Town with her husband and son, aims to embody the contemporary, strong and free-spirited woman that is becoming the pioneering female archetype in modern society.

The Vagabond bride wants to look beautiful but not at the expense of comfort and wearability, she doesn’t need to be afraid to look and feel strong, yet feminine in her wedding gown. Brides can expect strong, feminine and statement pieces, with an outstanding fit!. Each gown has an underlying timelessness in its silhouette, structure and fabric and we of course we pride ourselves on our quality – each piece is made individually by hand . Our collections will suit all contemporary tastes, including some classics with clean lines, bohemian gowns with textured lace and romantic shapes, as well as some daring rock n roll numbers.

Behind The Brand

Describe the woman you design for…

Vagabond aims to embody the contemporary, strong and free-spirited woman that is becoming the pioneering female archetype in modern society. The Vagabond bride wants to look beautiful but not at the expense of comfort and wearability, she doesn’t need to be afraid to look and feel strong, yet feminine in her wedding gown

What is your most popular piece?

Definitely our Alpha and Kahlo gowns – they both have strong structural lines, timeless silhouettes and an incredible fit!

What advice would you give to brides-to-be?

Be yourself! Don’t try to reinvent who you are for your wedding day.

As a designer, what tips do you have for brides to get the most out of their fittings?

There are a few things that I feel are important when wedding gown shopping. It starts with a little bit of research – first browse online for a brand that identifies with your personal style, make sure the styles you love are available as samples at your retailer, and shop for the gown you can afford. Bring the right people with you to your fitting – the ones who understand your personal style and will respect it while being honest. Don’t bring your auntie who thinks you don’t dress well and need help! It’s perfectly fine to go by yourself – most stylists are awesome at giving honest advise and recommendations! Don’t forget your shoes and correct underwear! Lastly, make sure you recognise the girl in the mirror – don’t follow the crowd!

Do you offer a custom design service for brides? If so, how long does it take to make a custom piece?

Yes we do offer a custom service, and we recommend to allow a minimum of 6-8 months for this.

What advice do you give to brides to care for their gown?

Get a great steam on the wedding day, and dry clean as soon as possible after the wedding so it cleans well! Explain to the cleaners what the gown is supposed to look like, so they don’t fold/press anything according to their assumptions! By the way, we have a few brides turning their wedding gown into a cocktail dress with a train snip!

Editor’s Notes

Why we love it…

A label we love for their chic, contemporary silhouettes in liquid like silks and elegant off shoulder details, and in contrast – their stunning use of texture with tiered tulle, ornate embroidery and 3D floral appliqué.

For the bride…

Looking for a modern gown that still feels timeless and elegant. Vagabond suits both the classicist with their chic silhouettes and the wildly bohemian with bell sleeves and sculptural embroidery.

Favorite piece…

We love the chic simplicity of the Aquarius gown, and the embroidered detailing of the Lotus gown.

Styling tips…

Style Vagabond’s classic silhouettes with bold earrings and keep the more ornate gowns completely accessories free. Contrast your look with hair that feels effortlessly undone.
