Behind The Brand
What was the spark for beginning Audrey Bea?
From the beginning, I have always admired and loved art and fashion so during school, I knew immediately that I wanted to be a clothing designer. Initially, I gravitated toward luxury women’s wear and then somehow along the line, found the beauty and intricacies that is bridal fashion. I think that I loved the idea that wedding attire and gowns are a tradition that is shared across culture and eras; it is something that has transcended time itself. It was a quick switch for me; I found that with bridal I could express all sides of my creativity and that there is a limitless well that I draw from and am inspired by. Building Audrey Bea the brand has been an extension of my love of art and fashion and it is important that each gown or piece embodies the timeless luxury I was drawn to from the very beginning.
What inspires you creatively?
I find inspiration from the delicate and intricate details of rose gardens, classical music (Gibran Alcocer is my current favorite), ballet, and Degas’ artwork in the way that he captures realism and movement.
A favourite quote or piece of advice that inspires your creative work?
“Elegance is not what you wear and it’s not about how you wear it, but it’s more about who you are.” -Alber Elbaz
What advice can you give to brides when shopping for their dress?
I would recommend asking yourself: “What’s the feeling that I want to give on my wedding day?” Take into account the location, wedding details, and the dress and how they all play a part in creating that feeling and environment. Then, start saving ideas! You can create mood boards of dresses you love or little details that stick out to you whether that is a sleeve detail from the runway 20 years ago or the train length of a gown in a bridal magazine you just saw. Notice if there is a common theme in design with what you save and if there are certain dress designers that reflect what you are saving.
Once you have an idea of what you like and what you are drawn to, create a list of what kind of things that you might like to try on. Try to keep an open mind during this process with silhouettes, fabrics, and details because you never know what you’ll fall in love with. Ultimately, this is your wedding affair and you should choose something that is a true reflection of you and how you want to feel.
What are you drawn to in bridal right now? And what would you love to see less of?
I am drawn to the return of classic silhouettes from eras long gone but where that design is paired thoughtfully with unique modern details that show that the gown itself is a work of art. There is something to be said about art that you wear and especially how it makes you feel on such a special day.
In general, I would probably say that I would like to see less of brides choosing a gown based on trends or what they see on others when it is not something that resonates with them personally.
