Behind The Brand

Your best pieces of advice for event planning?

Aaahhh…where to begin? There is so much I could share after hosting literally thousands of Byron Bay weddings over my 20 year career. But perhaps the question I get asked more often than any other is; “What are the best Byron Bay wedding ceremony locations?”

So I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite locations for a Byron Bay wedding ceremony. Everything, from the traditional to the unexpected.

For beach weddings, it’s hard to go past Clarkes Beach with its sweeping views of the bay, Byron Lighthouse, Mount Warning and Julian Rocks. Unlike other beaches in Byron Bay, Clarkes Beach is uncrowded whilst close to everything, including Beach Byron Bay. This is great, if you’re looking for a relaxed yet stylish beach location for your reception, one that your guests can stroll to after the ceremony. In the event of bad weather, couples also have the luxury of having their ceremony at Beach Byron Bay, including a stunning beachfront backdrop from our large undercover and protected deck.

For jaw-dropping views and iconic locations, the Byron Lighthouse is ideal and nothing says a “Byron Bay wedding” quite like it! There are, however, limited times when ceremonies can take place at the Byron Lighthouse precinct, so our advice is to check before booking or contact one of our wedding planners to help you with all the required council permits and paperwork.

For a more traditional ceremony, the 100 year-old St Oswald’s Anglican Church is a beautifully intimate venue with pretty lead light windows, antique wooden pews and a lovely bushland setting. Full of charm and character, this church is perfect for couples wishing for a church ceremony whilst not compromising on location. This venue is a 10 minute drive from town, so you may wish to consider transport for your guests or we can organise buses or private cars for you.

And, of course, we can’t leave out Wategos Beach. Wategos is also home to some of the most luxurious beachfront accommodation in Byron Bay, making it an ideal location for wedding parties to stay. Choose from the many truly unique hotels, guest houses and private bungalows. However, couples do need to check the tides for this beach and have a standby plan in case of bad weather. If you’re holding your reception at Beach Byron Bay, our team can help you with an indoor ceremony back-up plan and transportation.

No matter where couples choose to say ‘I do’ in Byron Bay, one thing is for certain, they’re spoilt for choice when it comes to gorgeous wedding ceremony spots.

What was the spark behind Beach Byron Bay? Where did the story begin?

We are located literally right on the beach. It’s what makes us unique and inspires every element of what we do. The restaurant is positioned on the dunes at Clarkes Beach in Byron Bay and overlooks Julian Rocks with sweeping uninterrupted views stretching in all directions from The Pass and the Byron Lighthouse in the south to Mount Warning and the Byron hinterland in the north. We are actually the only absolute beachfront restaurant and wedding venue in the area.

The story of Beach Byron Bay actually beings in 2007, when we were given the opportunity to take over Byron Bay’s long running Beach Cafe. The building enjoys some of the best ocean and mountain views in Australia however the building was sadly run down. After a complete rebuild, we launched the Byron Beach Cafe. Then in 2016, we became one of the select brands under The Fink Group umbrella – whose stable of leading Sydney restaurants include Quay, Bennelong, Fire Door, Otto and The Bridge Room. This led us in a new direction and we renamed the business Beach Byron Bay.

And nothing quite marks a fresh start better than a new look! Inspired by the sea, the sky and the sand, banks of new bi-fold doors were installed to open up the entire building to the ocean views, complete with a large outdoor dining deck with a fully retractable roof – so guests can dine under the stars. The interior is a contemporary, white-on-white space filled with natural light and weathered grey wood from reclaimed 100-year-old Sydney Harbour piers.

While outside the garden has been transformed to create a new wedding ceremony space with stone and wooden pathways, tropical greenery, jasmine vines and a white wooden boat that was once used on the set of The Pirates of the Caribbean film.

To match our new direction, our head chef, Enrico Semenzato, created a range of new menus influenced by the sea, coastal Mediterranean flavours and his love of local food. We’ve been extremely blessed in the past 12 months winning two major accolades, including 2018 Hatted Restaurant at the Good Food Guide National Awards and 2017 Wine List of the Year at the Gourmet Traveller Awards.

What inspires you creatively?

Steering clear of convention and looking to nature is what inspires my creativity. Think very natural, neutral with a clean style. Greenery mixed with white and ivory flowers, lots of organic wood and beautiful, but minimalist table settings. I’m really inspired by this take on weddings because it adopts the mantra that “less is more” and puts the focus back on the couple, their friends, family, the natural setting and our beautiful food. Creating a much more intimate experience for everyone.

I also draw huge amounts of creativity by getting to know a couple before their big day. I believe it’s important to design weddings that make a special connection for each individual bride and groom, that will touch their hearts, and be something they and their guests remember forever. This can only be achieved by a hands-on personal approach.

And, of course, I couldn’t leave out Byron Bay itself as a source of inspiration. With its white sand, palm trees and stunning Pacific Ocean – it truly is paradise. We feel so lucky that this is where we live and our job allows us to work with a marvellous network of local creative people from celebrants to florists to amazing wedding cake artists. And then there are the talented musicians, videographers and photographers. The pool of talent in this area is almost unlimited!

Packing tips for a wedding at Beach Byron Bay?

Not a thing! Seriously, we’ve got it all covered.

Our team has over 20 years experience organising local weddings and we can take care of everything. Or, for couples who prefer to be more hands-on, we can advise and guide them to the most professional service providers for their big day. Everything from entertainers, makeup artists, photographers, cake artisans, venue decorators, wedding dress designers, local jewellers and all other wedding day essentials.

However, planning a wedding in Byron Bay can present some unique challenges, particularly without local knowledge. Getting married on the beach in Byron Bay does require a good deal of forethought and there are a lot of details involved from the very practical matters of obtaining permits and checking tide times to transportation and styling. We find that the best way to start planning a Byron Bay wedding is to pick up the phone and give us a call. We’re here to help.

A typical weekend wedding at Beach Byron Bay?

No two days are ever the same, because we can honestly say that no two weddings at Beach Byron Bay have ever been the same. We don’t have packages or off-the-shelf products; we tailor each wedding to the individual needs of the client. The reason for this is simple. Every couple is different and we plan weddings that are specific to each and every bride and groom’s dreams. We enjoy spending as much time as necessary with each couple, helping them design a menu, sourcing beautiful pieces to make their day truly unique or working with the husband-to-be to plan a special surprise for his new wife! And vice versa!

However laid-back and relaxed or formal and opulent couples want their Byron Bay wedding to be, our aim is to make each experience unforgettable. We offer our clients the flexibility of managing every detail of their wedding or just organising one aspect, so it is difficult to describe a ‘typical’ day. However being the only purpose-built restaurant and wedding venue on the beach in Byron Bay, we offer our clients a unique opportunity to exchange their vows on the beach and then it’s just a short stroll up the dunes to their wedding reception.

Our team is on hand to greet guests with champagne, cocktails, aperitifs and canapés. We also provide towels and scented foot baths to wash the sand from their feet! This gives our newlyweds time to have their wedding photos taken; and, with one of the world’s most beautiful beaches on our doorstep, their photos are always stunning!

While many couples choose to utilise our beachfront location to exchange their vows on the sand, there has also been a revival in couples using our garden space for their wedding ceremony. While our garden is beautiful in its own right, many couples choose to decorate the space by creating a lush backdrop using garlands of cascading flowers and large-scale greenery, like palm fronds, for a bigger impact. While in the trees, fairy lights and lanterns can add a magical and romantic mood.

A favourite quote?

That’s a hard question. For me it’s hard not to love the simplicity of this quote from Buddha – “Understand that you own nothing, everything that surrounds you is temporary, only the love in your heart will last forever.”
