What inspired you to start Cavalier?

Cavalier is an evolution of Dane Stevens’s family fine gemstone business, which spans three generations of importing exquisite gems from around the world to the Canadian market. The idea was born from a desire to elevate the retail jewelry experience by offering the world’s finest gems directly to customers. Cavalier aims to bridge the gap between traditional jewelry stores and the new generation of engagement ring buyers seeking exceptional quality, service, and a unique selection that stands out from the rest. The aim was to build a store that the Founders, Dane Stevens and Keith Seabrook, would shop at themselves.

How would you describe Cavalier’s aesthetic?

Cavalier’s aesthetic is timeless yet contemporary, with a strong emphasis on highlighting natural beauty and craftsmanship. We celebrate the raw elegance of gemstones, valuing their natural origins and unique characteristics. Our designs blend refined luxury with a modern edge, appealing to those who appreciate understated sophistication, quality, and personal expression in their jewelry choices. Every piece is thoughtfully crafted – one at a time – to tell a story, connecting the wearer to the rich heritage of the stones and the journey from mine to masterpiece.

What inspires you creatively?

Our creative inspiration comes from the gems themselves—their colors, origins, and the stories they carry through the people who have helped bring them to market. We are deeply inspired by our travels to mines in Sri Lanka, Colombia, and Myanmar, where we have built trusted relationships with local dealers and witnessed the beauty of these stones in their natural environments. Nature, culture, and the human connection to these elements fuel our designs. We also draw from the timeless adages and values that have been passed down through generations, infusing each piece with a sense of history and purpose.

What advice would you give to couples shopping for their engagement ring?

We always encourage couples to take their time and enjoy the process of finding a ring that truly resonates with their story. Consider what speaks to you both in terms of style, symbolism, and sentiment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—understanding the quality, origin, and uniqueness of a gemstone is key. On the flip side, we would like to see less of the mass-produced, impersonal jewelry that lacks character and craftsmanship. We believe jewelry should be more than just an accessory; it should be a reflection of personal values and a connection to something greater.
