Behind The Brand

What was the initial spark for your brand, how did it all begin?

The story of Heirlooms Design began when I was a bride that got married in 2011. My mother and I collected all of the table settings and decor for my wedding which was in my small hometown in Michigan with the ceremony at a local lighthouse and reception in a historic barn. The process of collecting all the was kind of a nod to my Dutch grandmother who was an avid an=que collector who I grew up hunting for treasures with at estate sales.

The name Heirlooms stems from the direct word and concept of a family heirloom and a somewhat nostalgic love story with the concept of “something of special value handed down from one generation to another” and the idea that moments in time can possibly become heirlooms – belonging to a family, handed down through the sharing of memories.

And of course, when it comes to the actual selected pieces adorning tables and scenes – we are focused on curating designs that are timeless, collected, meaningful and cherished. Heirlooms Design launched from having this inventory of collected and curated rentals and then evolved into doing less of the actual rental aspect and now only planning, design, styling and production.

We’ve planned, designed and hand a hand in over 175 weddings and events to date since our launch in 2012.

As a planner or stylist, what are you inspired by at the moment in the world of weddings?

I will always gravitate to and be inspired by very natural and earthy palettes and foundations, but love a good juxtaposition with a flare or edge of something unexpected, whether it feels a little raw, wabi-sabi or artsy.

I’m currently loving heavy drapery – pleated and manipulated luxurious materials, fruits and vegetables in tablescapes (especially radicchio, garlic, figs, tomatoes) almost like edible centerpieces. And I’m truly in love with the current trends that echo the Renaissance and Romeo & Juliet coming back… deep v corsets, architectural moments with tablescapes, charcuterie and desserts.

What would you like to see less of?

I am based in the mountains of Colorado and the southwest (high desert mountains) of the United States where I would like to see less of the reproduced “rustic” and “bohemian” generic themes that often come with “mountain weddings” … gauze runners on wood farm tables, etc. I love when clients want to get married in the mountains but makes the affair truly unique and different… bringing various aspects of their likes, interests and experiences from other places into the mountains.

A styling/planning tip or two you’ve learned along the way that you’d give to any couple?

I always like to say “stick to your guns” which is an old western saying that just means stay true to yourself and your core opinion and interests and “listen to your gut reaction”.

Entering into wedding planning can feel sooverwhelming, especially getting on Pinterest or following all the various vendors on Instagram, so it’s important to work on core priorities and values early on and keep circling back to what really feels right to the couple and is a true representation of them.
