Behind The Brand
What draws you to wedding photography?
I think, ultimately, it always comes down to people. There’s the couple themselves, of course. But then there are the supporting cast of family members and friends. Having all these people in one place, together, ready to have the best time ever is a genuinely rare and wonderful thing.
As a wedding photographer I get to witness the sincere, love-felt connections between these people – and it fascinates me. It’s all about documenting these relationships with curiosity, care and above all, feeling. Your wedding photos should resonate with you for years to come so it’s my goal to deliver exactly that: a bespoke set of images that are stylish, yet incredibly meaningful.
How would you describe your photography style?
I love interesting light, fleeting moments, small but important details, and rich colours. I prefer to keep things pretty minimal and there’s definitely a bit of a cinematic vibe going on too. But mainly, it’s about creating beautiful, modern wedding photography for beautiful, modern couples.
What inspires you creatively?
Photography books, lots and lots of music, movies (especially those with a strong, distinct visual language) and, above all, my family. That’s it, that’s all. If you wanted to know what makes me tick – what I completely and utterly love losing myself in – then it’s these four things. From the first time I first picked up a camera, it’s always been this way for me. Always will be.
Kathie, Rose and Wren – my beautiful, slightly weird, but utterly gorgeous family are the most important piece of this puzzle. They’re my biggest inspiration (as well as my biggest critics) and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What is it that makes an image magical?
I think it just has to make you feel something. If a photo makes you pause and consider it, then it’s likely that there’s something about it that resonates with you in a positive way.
As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m very much drawn to different types of light and the varying moods it can evoke. On a wedding day it can really add something special to what is already an incredible experience, and I love to utilise it however I can.
What advice would you give couples when selecting their wedding photographer?
I recommend spending some time getting to know each other while familiarising yourself with their work and approach. Ask them to share full galleries from previous weddings and take your time to communicate your plans and vision. Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions.
Weddings are very much collaborative affairs so the better you know each other, the better the photos will be on the day itself.
Your dream location to shoot a wedding?
Good question! I’d love to work in Japan – maybe Tokyo? I do love travelling and while I’ve been to plenty of amazing places, the Far East is one I’ve yet to spend much time in. So I’d love the chance to work over there one day.
Editor’s Notes
Why we love Luke…
Fleeting moments are frozen through the lens of visionary photographer Luke Bell. We love the way he focuses on the ‘scenes in between’ – the fragments of raw, unexplainable, emotion infused connections between humans. Bell creatively uses light and color to craft cinematic visuals that aim to make the viewer gasp, time and time again.
For the couple…
Based in the UK, Luke works all around the world making him perfect for destination weddings, and his creative approach will make your wedding seem like a magical story from a film, made to be rewatched for generations to come.
Our advice…
As Luke explains, the connection between subject and photographer can be the difference between a simple memorable image and being able to create pure magic. Take time to immerse yourself in his past work and if it resonates with you, reach out and get to know each other.
