Behind the Brand
What was the initial spark for the property and how did it all begin?
Built in the 18th century, the mansion, originally owned by an aristocratic family of Matera, is surrounded by hundreds of acres of land which was once dedicated to the production of olive oil, wheat and other grains. The name, Fontana di Vite or ‘Fountain of Lives’, is inspired by an old tradition. The story tells of a spring located close to the Masseria, which was so pure that the residents living in a village nearby would journey to that spot for its water.
Before the building’s 1806 expansion, the structure was comprised of the noble house residency, located on the first floor, and the warehouse with barrel vaults, on the ground floor, which was used to store the wheat. Other rooms around the courtyard were used as wine cellars and small storage depots.
In the early 1900s Fontana di Vite was significantly expanded with the addition of a chapel, an outdoor oven, two other large warehouses to store tobacco leaves and small houses for the farm workers called “Lamielle” due to the shape of the ceiling with small barrel vaults. At that time Masseria Fontana di Vite transformed into a rural village hosting almost 40 families.
Today the family that owns it re-converted the mansion in a country hotel where they host also an art residency. The idea at the basis of the restoration was to keep the authenticity and still giving the guests modern facilities to enjoy the countryside at its best. The 19 elegant and spacious rooms all have a private garden or terrace and access to wi-fi. Some rooms also feature a spa bath. The furniture is a balanced mix combining modern comfort with a look to the past.
What spaces do you offer for a wedding or event?
Today the property has many common areas for relaxing, reading and partying. It is equipped with two reception rooms that can accommodate up to 200 people and countless outside areas (pool area, 1 acre garden area, an olive grove as well as a church).
How many guests can you cater for?
250 maximum
What is it that makes your property magic?
The sweeping view of the countryside, the authenticity of the Masseria and the meticulous restoration works makes Fontana di Vite one of a kind.
What advice can you give couples when selecting their venue?
The couple should look for a venue that they love but also should think of the facilities that a venue can provide them (and a backup plan indeed!).
