Behind The Brand
What draws you to wedding photography?
I began my journey into wedding photography when I felt the Lord tell me to do so. I had never even owned a camera before and one day in April of 2019 when I was praying to God for direction in my life, I very clearly heard the Lord say you’re going to be a wedding photographer. I bought a camera a month later and shot my first wedding three months later. Since then I have fallen in love with the medium. It’s the perfect blend of all the varieties of photography into one. It’s routine, yet always different. It’s design-driven and people-oriented. Basically, it’s the perfect career for me.
How would you describe your photography style?
My style is a blend between photojournalism and fine art. My goal is to create art inspired by the humanity in front of my lens. I love using light and composition to create emotive imagery, but most important to me is capturing authentic moments. My style relies on humans being humans, choosing to be vulnerable, live fully and unfold for the camera.
What inspires you creatively?
Experiencing life with all the senses, especially through travel. My heart comes alive when I’m seeing new places, tasting new foods, hearing new music, smelling new smells. I feel most refreshed when I go on retreats with God. It’s an opportunity to ground myself and find beauty in the world around me. Some of my favorite places that inspire me are Spain, Mammoth (CA), and big cities like San Francisco.
What is it that makes an image magical?
I have two answers for this. First, technically impressive uses of light, blur and composition will always stop me in my tracks. My main technically challenging motifs are very pointy sun flares and motion blur with my subject in focus. Second, highly emotive imagery. There is something so beautiful in seeing an image of a raw human experience. I will always pause on an image that showcases laughter, tears, longing, etc. without intruding on the moment.
What advice would you give couples when selecting their wedding photographer?
Prioritize these three things, in this order: personality, style, price. Your wedding photographer’s personality and style will set the atmosphere for your wedding day AND you’ll spend more time with them than any other vendor on the day of the wedding. If your photographer is high strung or demanding, you’ll feel that. If your photographer’s style is really posed, but you wanted to be laid back and candid, you’ll feel that. These images are the main thing that’ll outlive the wedding day. Even if you keep the dress, press the florals, or save the top of the cake, your wedding photos will be enjoyed for a lifetime and generations to come. Price shouldn’t deter you from booking with the photographer of your dreams. If the personality and style is right, make budget space for the photographer you want.
Your dream location to shoot a wedding?
No questions – Granada, Spain. I was supposed to study abroad in Granada in college. A month before the program my grandmother passed away and I had to pull out of the program. It was a really dark time but was redeemed when my husband and I honeymooned there a few years later. I have fallen in love with the Andalusian way of life, the architecture and the weather. My dream is to one day live part time for the summer wedding season.
