Behind The Brand

What was the spark for Pia & Jade? Where did your story begin?

I had just finished studying interior architecture at university, and after what felt like a lifetime sitting in a computer lab, drafting plans on CAD, I decided I didn’t want to sit for 8 or more hours a day in front of a computer (especially when I swear it doesn’t want to be my friend half the time!) My love for design was being out and about, discovering new ideas, playing with different furnishings and being hands on. I was in the process of moving back to the South Coast after uni, so thinking of how I could best apply my skill set to what I enjoy, weddings and events were a way to start building my portfolio, meet new people and create interiors for lovers on the most special day of their life (and what do you know, that events management diploma I did at TAFE, that I could have sworn I would never utilise, comes in handy too!!)

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from?

My late grandmother has been my creative inspiration throughout my whole life, hence why one half of the business is named after her (her initials are PIA). From the age of eight, I learnt to sew, quilt, make dolls and bears, arrange flowers and attended quilting clubs on school holidays (the older ladies loved it!!) This gave me a good understanding of colour, texture and production from an early age. My inspiration these days comes from everyday life and the things I surround myself with. My in-laws have a farm which keeps me close to nature, my parents are mad collectors of antiques and old world treasures and I love to pour over fashion magazines and spend weekends wandering through furniture and interior stores.

What style of floristry and flowers are you loving at the moment?

Mixing dried and fresh florals! A beautiful fluffy rose looks so amazing juxtaposed with a dried palm leaf, dried hydrangea or fluffy grass. I think it’s really lovely that we can use florals and foliage throughout their whole lifespan. I also love anything that combines red and pink; so girly, yet modern.

How would you describe your style when it comes to your products and services?

I wouldn’t say I have a recognisable style when it comes to my work; I’d get bored doing the same thing every weekend! I like working with the couple, what inspires them, as well as what is going to best suit the venue and feel for the day. Previous weddings we have created have ranged from Outdoor Tuscan feasts to abundant luxe florals running the entire length of a dining table to bohemian weddings with dried florals. I definitely think “less is more” and a beautifully curated tablescape with the most meticulous attention to detail outweighs going overboard with Pinterest ideas any day!

What elements of a wedding do you help with?

We can do as little or as much as the bride needs. We offer full scale styling and floral design, on-the-day coordination, bridal party flowers and stationery. I have found my couples have so many other things to source when planning a wedding, the fact I can take control of all the creative elements and be one point of contact is hugely beneficial in saving them time and money. Being so involved in the planning means I can become good friends with my couples, which I think is lovely, as I begin to see their own personality, likes and dislikes to make sure their wedding is a true reflection of them.

What advice would you give couples when deciding on a theme or style for their wedding?

Be true to yourself. Don’t follow trends or try to “keep up with the Jones’s”. Also, don’t be afraid to use colour. I have so many brides in initial emails say “Oh, I just want white and green so it doesn’t date.” Everything is going to eventually date (what wedding from the 70s and 80s doesn’t make you cringe?) and a white and green wedding may not be the best representation of you, so if you want brights, pinks, dried, or darker colours, go for it!
