Behind The Brand

Your best pieces of advice for vacation planning?

One of the best things about vacations are that they transport us out of the everyday and encourage us to be in the moment.  When planning getaways we encourage people to search for places that challenge them, offering a different perspective to usual day to day routines and transporting them to another place through their  uniqueness, creativity and beauty.

What was the spark for Shackpalace? Where did the story begin?

After many years designing luxurious and often large homes, Frank Macchia, co-owner and designer felt a growing need to create smaller, sustainable homes that challenge conventional living and inspire a healthy lifestyle that focusses on nurturing the mind, body and spirit.    Having travelled widely up and down the east coast of Australia to visit family members, we also saw a need for great places to stay that were in line with our love of all things organic, artisan, sustainable and nourishing.   Shackpalace Design Studio and Shackpalace Holiday Homes are there results of these visions, and we are very excited about what is yet to come.

What inspires you creatively?

At Shackpalace we are wired to be part of a revolution of changing the status quo.  Our focus is a housing revolution – by constantly questioning our current housing types and ideas, and re-imagining new ideas and spaces to live in that will serve us better.  We believe that this housing revolution will create homes that can inspire us to thrive and grow into more connected beings – connected with each other and our environment.

Most memorable place you’ve travelled?

We have some fantastic memories of staying at Riva Lofts Florence designed by Claudio Nardi when travelling as a family in Italy around 10 years ago.   Instead of doing the tourist thing in Florence, we spent many hours relaxing in the Villa gazing at the Arno River and the people passing by.

On a typical weekend we’ll find you?

We have aimed to create a lifestyle in Byron Bay where our weekends and weekdays blend together and we enjoy similar rituals each day.  These can include an early morning beach walk/run or surf, a spiritual practice, some office work & designing, creative time in the kitchen, a visit to the local markets or a cafe, and some great discussions around the table with family & friends.
