About Tutu du Monde

Celebrating the imaginations of little (and big) girls, each Tutu Du Monde piece is truly unique— just like its wearer— and is perfect for all occasions, from playing dress-ups to being a flower girl. A Tutu du Monde garment is designed to be treasured for decades to come, creating powerful memories before being passed on through the generations.

Quality and artistry are at the core of the brand, so naturally we work with India’s most skilled beaders, helping to keep an ancient art alive by adapting traditional embroidery techniques to innovate and create contemporary pieces.

Behind the Brand

What was the spark for beginning your brand?

My daughter, who was maybe 4 at the time and wanted a princess/ballerina/fairy dress. I couldn’t find anything suitable other than some shiny polyester costumes so I decided to make my own.

What inspires you creatively?

Traveling, nothing is better than leaving the studio and breaking your routine. I was back in India late last year for the first time in a while and it blew my mind. The skills, passion and dedication of our wonderful artisans is not something you encounter every day. They have grown their businesses alongside ours and their gratefulness shows in everything they do. India is a magical place. I want to do well just that for them so their business flourishes too. They’re like extended family because they care so much.

Inspiration comes from so many other places as well like art, music and a journey through decades past whether via movies or books. We use traditional beading techniques to make contemporary garments, I hope by connecting the past with the present, we can keep those skills alive in the age of technology.

A favorite quote or piece of advice that inspires your creative work?

“Always stay true to your artistic vision and prioritize quality in everything you create. When designing childrenswear, especially pieces like flower girl dresses, it’s essential to balance beauty with comfort and practicality. Use materials that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also soft and gentle on a child’s skin. Moreover, be mindful of the environmental and social impact of your production processes.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of imagination – in the world of design, it’s your greatest asset.”

What advice can you give to brides when shopping for a flowergirl dress?

Shopping for a flower girl dress can be a delightful part of wedding planning, I would consider the theme and color scheme of the wedding. The flower girl’s dress should complement the bridal gown and bridesmaid’s dresses, either in style or color.

Comfort is everything and doesn’t need to compromise style.

We design flower girl dresses with comfort in mind. Young girls can become irritable if their clothing is right or restrictive. Our dresses are light, stretchy, and super comfortable to wear.

It’s also wise to buy the dress closer to the wedding date. If you’re buying well in advance, consider a size up to accommodate growth. A lot of our dresses have adjustable straps so dresses can easily be for 2-3 years.

If possible, involve the flower girl in the selection process. Let her have a say in the dress, which can make her more excited about her role and ensure she’s happy and comfortable on the day.

In the world of flower girl dresses, what appeals to you currently? What would you like to see less of, if anything?

In the world of flower girl dresses, what appeals to me is the blend of traditional beading techniques with a modern approach in the silhouettes. Additionally, the use of soft, comfortable fabrics is important.

The incorporation of subtle color is also something that appeals greatly. While classic ivory is always popular, offering pastel shades like blush pink, soft lavender, or light blue adds a touch of whimsy and can complement the wedding color scheme.

Lastly, versatility in design is key. Dresses that can be worn for after the  event offer practicality. Our flower girl dresses are designed with that in mind, designs with adjustable features not only allow for the dress to be worn for years to come (and even be passed down) but the not-so-formal designs themselves to be worn in a many more casual settings, making them a more sustainable and value-conscious choice.

In the world of flower girl dresses, there are a few trends and features that I would like to see less of:

Comfort should be a priority for children’s attire. Scratchy lace, stiff tulle, or ill-fitting dresses can cause discomfort for young girls. It would be better to see less of these and more focus on soft, breathable fabrics and designs that allow for easy movement

Sometimes, flower girl dresses mimic adult bridal fashion too closely. Children’s dresses should reflect their innocence and youth, so more age-appropriate styles that are playful and fun are a must.

Sustainability is increasingly important. Dresses that are only suitable for a single occasion contribute to waste. I’d like to see fewer of these and more designs that can be repurposed or worn on multiple occasions such as Tutu du Monde dresses.
