What was the spark for NEST Tulum? Where did the story begin?

I believe life is for living fully and having new and amazing (yet sometimes very difficult) experiences —this simple ideology is at the foundation of NEST Tulum. In 2015 while I was, a philanthropist, filmmaker, and former music industry executive I came across an old villa that was in desperate need of love and repair.  Originally built 22 years prior, it was one of the first private homes built in Tulum when Tulum was nothing more than a few taco shacks and hippy camping sites. In 2015 we began the careful and simple restoration of those existing buildings into what is now one of Tulum’s most popular boutique hotels. We wanted to preserve the integrity of those old buildings, so we hired local Mayan craftsman to help us in the restoration. Everything was done by hand. It was a difficult and time-consuming project but one that was very important to me. We are not fancy or high tech. We are natural, simple and we think that is what makes us unique.

After years of hard work and a battle with leukemia, I was ready for a dramatic change. I made the huge decision to trade it all in, including my home, belongings, and music business career to further my future in Mexico. The goal was to create a new reality and finally pursue my passion for design. NEST Tulum is a realization of this, the tranquillity I envisioned is achieved through a blend of the natural simplicity of the décor, the intimate secluded location and a commitment to having a welcoming atmosphere with a high level of service.

The décor of NEST is reflective of its natural surroundings with a design mandate and mantra of natural simplicity. The boutique property has nine individually styled guest rooms, four-bedroom villa and common spaces all steps away from a breathtaking oceanfront and all of NEST is appointed with furniture and décor locally-sourced. This minimalist decor includes nest-inspired lamp fixtures fashioned from local Vejuco roots, benches and repurposed castaways from the woodworkers in Coba, beautiful antique furniture from San Miguel de Allende and hand-embroidered pillows from Merida and Oaxaca.

What inspires you creatively?

Intention. I know that is a vague answer but when someone creates something, no matter what it is, clothes, food, textiles, buildings, furniture or hotels with intention, you can feel it.  The best example of this is in Japan. Almost everything is created with intention even a cup of tea and that is what makes it so good and inspiring.

Most memorable place you’ve travelled?

Base Camp of Mount Everest. Kathmandu Nepal in 2010 I took a group of musicians their trekkers and supports and set off to perform at the time was the highest concert ever performed 18,100. We spent 14 days hiking to basecamp playing music and have the experience of a lifetime. The event was to raise money for my cancer charity Love Hope Strength Foundation and to help buy equipment for the cancer centre in Nepal, supporting free treatment to those in need. I said then “Most people come to Nepal for Everest, but they come back for the people. The people of Nepal live on $1 a day but what you see is streets full of smiles, bowing and namastes, happiness. Happy with their difficult yet simple lives. There is so much to be learned from the amazing people of this country.

On a typical weekend at NEST Tulum?

Relaxing. The same as every other day.  That is what is so great about being located in a vacation destination you honestly forget what day it is.  NEST is in the middle of all the action but is a very private and under the radar hotel and that is exactly the way we like it. Many of our guests come to the experience the fun and party of Tulum but also want a place to chill out with privacy and great service.
