Through The Photographer’s Lens: What Makes An Image Truly Magical?

We asked some of the world’s most talented wedding photographers what needs to transpire to create magical images.

A dress in motion, soft and sculptural, dissolving into art through a half-closed gaze. Lovers entwined, their hands speaking in quiet gestures. A tablescape reflected in rippling water, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Trees swaying gently in the wind, their rhythm a whispered echo of timeless beauty. Moments frozen in time through the lens of a skilled image-maker. Dramatic compositions, monochrome tones, and elegance distilled into thoughtful simplicity – what transforms an image into a standout? It’s not just about telling a thousand words, but capturing a feeling, a story, a moment that lingers. Each detail becomes part of a greater narrative. These talented photographers reflect on one essential question: What makes a photo truly magical?

Focus on emotion and connection

The team behind the talented Dos Mas En La Mesa: “People tend to think of a great image in terms of composition, content or light. However, “the magic” truly happens when an image touches someone deep inside. When it comes to poetic images, it is no longer about the answers an image gives you, but about the questions it poses…”

Wedding photographer Tales of Romance: “What makes an image magic is its ability to transport you back to a specific moment and evoke the emotions tied to it. I remember the time I captured this beautiful bride, Elise, embracing her grandmother right after her wedding ceremony. The joy on her grandmother’s face said everything about their bond. It wasn’t just a photo; it became a timeless reminder of love, family, and legacy.”

Documentary wedding photographer Kreativ Wedding: “Magic comes from the connections an image holds. I remember capturing a bride’s first look with her grandmother – she was sitting near the door, waiting patiently. The bride walked down the stairs, and their expressions said it all. It was magical because it was raw, authentic, and deeply meaningful to their relationship.”

Wedding photographer Fedor Borodin: “Magic happens when a photograph tells a lasting story. I remember capturing Anastasia, a bride and fashion stylist, in her stunning hat. We wanted a portrait that reflected her bold, rebellious spirit. Incorporating a playful cloche and a pink pig – an inside joke – brought everything together: her style, personality, and the narrative of their day.”

Let the light work for you

Editorial wedding photographer Marta Ilardo: “The light and the time. And by the time I mean – the right moment, but also the time that gives the image another layers of meaning. If there’s authenticity and connection in the image, the time will only make it better. And that’s the magic of photography in general – if it’s good, it will only get stronger and more powerful with time.”

Wedding photographer in UK and France, Lauriane Vega: “An image is magical when it feels alive, holding onto the heartbeat of a moment. I think of the time I caught a bride and groom in their car, their hands reaching toward each other as sunlight spilled onto their fingers. They didn’t know I took the shot, but that one candid frame said so much about their love. It became one of their favorite images – and mine too.”

Californian wedding photographer Hannah Bri:Magic is when an image transforms a fleeting moment into something timeless. I recall a couple right after their ceremony, stealing a quiet embrace away from everyone. The sunlight caught her veil just right, casting a glow that felt almost surreal. That one moment, full of love and light, remains one of my most magical captures.”

Embrace the Unexpected

US-based photographer Anni Graham: “It will always be what is happening in the photo and the significance it has to that person. Yes, some images with stunning light, composition, and emotion can be breathtaking, but if there’s one thing that rocked me to my core when I became a mother – it was the beauty of the imperfect. I have seven dark, blurry iPhone photos that someone took of my first child being born and they are the only images that bring me to tears every time I look at them. The big, grand and beautiful doesn’t even come close to intimacy of a real, soul altering moment.  Bringing that perspective to wedding photography transformed my work.”

Melbourne-based editorial wedding photographer Sirena: “For me, magic in an image comes from its emotional resonance. I’ll never forget a quiet day on a Korean beach, photographing my kids running barefoot in the sand. That summer was about healing and freedom, and the grainy tones of my film camera immortalized it. That one shot captured not only their joy but the warmth of the sun and the salty air – everything I felt in that moment.” Photographer Barbara Markiewicz: “A photograph becomes magic when it freezes a moment that tells a bigger story. One evening in Spain, I captured wedding guests in a courtyard, waving napkins in unison under string lights. The laughter and joy of that moment still resonate with me. Seeing the image in black-and-white made it even more timeless – an unforgettable celebration of love and community.”

Dare to Trust

Mary Dougherty: “Magic happens when there’s trust between photographer and subject, allowing moments to unfold naturally. One time, after a reception, my couple took a walk to the dock where swans often visited. They fed the swans and danced together quietly. I captured that fleeting moment – the swans, the stillness, their joy – and it became a lasting memory of their life together.”
