Behind The Brand
Your best advice when shooting weddings?
Always get know the couple, whether that be over the phone, Skype calls or meeting in person. It’s always easier to feel like you know a bit about them before the day. Know your location, what shots your looking for on the day, where the best location is for sunset, best lighting etc. Try to make bride, groom and wedding party feel comfortable and feel as though they can be themselves in front of the camera, as a lot of people get camera shy. Making jokes to lighten the mood and minimizing direction lets the couple feel comfortable and do their thing. Too much direction can become overwhelming and uncomfortable, the day is about having fun and keeping the mood light.
What was the spark for Aiden Lovett Films? Where did the story begin?
I have always had a passion for filmmaking and photography, when I was young I would make surf and skate movies with my mates on an old VHS camcorder, go home that night and start editing it, add some lame 90’s punk music and plenty of cheesy transitions, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It wasn’t until years later in my early to mid 20’s I realized something was missing from my life, I needed to get that creativity back and chase my passion, so I enrolled in a film production degree at a SAE Institute. I basically had no idea what I wanted to do within the industry or how to even go about it, but I just knew I wanted to create something that people could see and feel some sort of emotion from it, happy, sad, inspired…? As long as something is taken away from it, I think I’ve done my job. After a long road of ups and downs, deciding which direction to take I realized that I wanted to do what made me happy above all things so that’s where ‘Aiden Lovett Films’ came about. I had the freedom to work for myself choose the jobs that suited me (after a couple of years) and have a broad range of work to create. It definitely was not an easy path to go down, but the one that suited me best. So now I’m lucky enough to work on Weddings, Music videos, short films, commercials, this year I will working on my first feature film as the DOP. Every job has its own uniqueness and you learn something new every day, which is why I love it.
What inspires you creatively?
I get my inspiration from music, if there is a song I really like I can picture the film in my head. Movies inspire me, Tarantino is my favorite Director and is a huge inspiration to me. And nature really inspires me, the beauty and calming energy can often reignite the creative flame inside you. Especially the ocean, it is like my oxygen.
On a typical weekend we’ll find you?
Probably surfing Snapper Rocks or Fingal. Followed by a cold beer somewhere, and probably in bed by 9 watching a movie.
A favorite quote?
“Do to others the way you would like to be treated” – a belief I think most people try to live by and I think is a very simple but important.
