Behind The Brand

What are some of your favorite beauty products you like to use for brides?

I’m a big fan of skincare, so I like to start off with a good cleanse and lots of hydration. I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar to cleanse and am loving the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist (a nice moment of calming aromatherapy during a bride’s busy prep), followed by Jurlique Activating Water Essence and Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer. And always, always use Lanolips 101 Ointment on the lips.

What is your process of conceptualizing hair and makeup looks with brides and bridesmaids ahead of the wedding day?

I really do feel a trial is a collaboration between the artist and bride. I do a thorough consultation to begin. We discuss the mood of the wedding, the gown, bridesmaids colors, look at reference photos they’ve collected and most importantly, how they wear their makeup and hair from day-to-day. If you’ve never worn a red lip before, your wedding day is not the time to try it!

Then I’ll do a look that I think suits the brief, their face and needs and then we tweak until we’re both happy. I really like the bride to feel she has control, while I am able to make my professional suggestions.

What’s your advice for brides when deciding on bridal hair and makeup looks?

It’s ok to not be exactly clear on what you want! There’s a lot of pressure to have everything sorted, so it’s ok if you’re a little bit fuzzy on the details because that’s what your trial is for and that’s why you’ve called in the professionals!

Also, use references. A lip color from here, an eye color from there… whether it’s a Pinterest board or magazine cut-outs, photo references are a valuable communication tool.

What tips, tricks or advice do you have for brides to increase the longevity of their bridal look throughout the wedding day?

I think a less-is-more approach is key. The more makeup on the skin, the more there’s a need for touch-ups! So skin preparation is vital to giving a great base. Start treatments well in advance to give yourself a head start.

I do also like to provide my brides with a touch-up kit on their day. We use blotting papers instead of powder for removing shine without getting cakey. They also have some of their lipstick color and concealer for touch-ups when I’m not there to do it for them.

Do you travel for weddings?

I most definitely do! Most of my weddings take place in Sydney, but I venture down along the south coast and up to Newcastle and the Hunter Valley regularly. Love a destination wedding too!
