Ivy + Stone Cake Design was founded in 2012 with a goal of supplying our clientele with creations unique to them and their event. We specialise in contemporary fondant cake design, with a large focus on creating edible art. We aim to keep ahead of current trends, providing bespoke designs in a range of mediums and eclectic fresh or sugar floral arrangements. We have high standards and hope this is reflected through all of our work to ensure our client receives a cake exceeding all expectations.

Your best piece of advice for event planning?
Trust your suppliers. Chances are, they have been working in their chosen field for years and know exactly what works best. They know what produce is best, what colour scheme works together and how to add interest and texture to their work. Allowing them creative freedom (wholly or partially) is important. It allows them to get excited about the project and that is when you will receive the best possible product they can produce. Nothing is more exciting than a trusting client.
What was the spark for Ivy & Stone Cake Design? Where did the story begin?
Starting my own business was something I had never thought about. 2012 was my first year out of school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I took a gap year and worked in a cake supply shop. I slowly gathered enough supplies to make my very first cake and I honestly fell in love with it from then on. I continued to experiment and hone my skills and by the end of that year, I had started a business. It’s been 5.5 years and I haven’t looked back. The business has organically evolved over the years, despite my challenges, but I still find so much joy in what I create. Knowing that my clients love their cakes as much as I do is the best feeling in the world and truly keeps me going. These days I am super excited to continue experimenting and pushing my creative boundaries in directions I never imagined.
What inspires you creatively?
These days, I think I draw most inspiration from art movements and fashion. I love looking at artistic work and thinking ‘how can I translate this onto a cake?’ After being in the cake decorating world for 5 years, I think the options are almost endless. I aspire to continue pushing the envelope with my designs to create timeless pieces of edible art.
Most memorable place you’ve travelled?
Hawaii. I just remember the overwhelming sense of peace I felt in this place. It was so soothing. The holiday wasn’t perfect but for some reason, I have the fondest memories and I would love to re-experience the joy I felt.
On a typical weekend, we’ll find you?
Hmm, given the fact most of my work is due on the weekend, I’ll usually be found in my studio or in the car delivering cakes all around town. However, if I have a rare weekend off, you’ll find me in a local cafe, drinking delicious coffee and catching up with friends. Or, camped out in front of Netflix for some much needed R&R.

There are so many that I love, but a current favourite is ‘It’s always too early to quit.’
