Behind The Brand
Your best pieces of advice for event planning?
It feels really overwhelming at the beginning but organising as much as possible, as early as possible makes everything feel smoother. Details do matter but not to the extent that they will make you super stressed on the day. It’s hard to capture those beautiful candid shots if you’re worried about little things not going to plan.
The best dance floors are when both the bride and groom hardly leave it.
What was the spark for Sophie Thompson Photography? Where did the story begin?
I discovered photography while living in London in my young twenties as a way to document and preserve memories. I started a personal blog to share my experiences of living on the other side of the world and became increasingly inspired by beautiful photographs so I asked for my first DSLR camera for my 21st birthday. Looking back, that was the beginning of it all but it took many years until I felt confident enough to photograph the most memorable day in peoples lives. And what an absolute privilege it is that it’s lead to this – being surrounded by so much love and joy. I’ll appreciate it forever and ever.
What inspires you creatively?
Oh gosh! Is it a bit of a cop-out to say everything? But it’s true! I’m deeply inspired by nature – the ocean, the mountains, the countryside – travel, art, interiors, music, love, natural light, crisp fresh air, motherhood and the magic of the everyday.
Most memorable place you’ve travelled?
It’s hard to pick because everywhere I’ve been lucky enough to travel to has been so memorable! But the trip that keeps popping up in my mind is my honeymoon. My husband and I road tripped through Tennessee, North & South Carolina, Georgia & down through Florida and it was the absolute best! Southern hospitality is a real thing – everyone we met were so incredibly friendly and we just loved the slower pace of the coastal towns down the East Coast. I also feel like if I didn’t love living in Sydney so much, I would be living in Charleston, SC!
On a typical weekend we’ll find you?
If I’m not photographing a wedding, I really love having super low-key weekends with my husband, baby son & pup. I’ll still be snapping away on my iPhone camera taking a billion photos of everything we get up to. It will most likely revolve around getting outside for a big beach walk, going on a delicious brunch date or going over to my parents house for my dad to cook us up a beautiful late lunch paired with a particular wine he’s wanting us to try. I also love weekend getaways with a group of friends so will often try schedule those in around weddings.
A favorite quote?
It’s hard for me to pick because I love quotes and poetry, so I’ve narrowed it down to three:
“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow” – Mary Jean Irion
“There are stars you haven’t seen and loves you haven’t loved. There’s light you haven’t felt and sunrises yet to dawn. There are dreams you haven’t dreamt and days you haven’t lived. Nights you won’t forget and flowers yet to grow. And there is more to you that you have yet to know” – Gaby Comprés
“If you want to change the world, go home and love your family” – Mother Teresa
